Shifter knob wont push down .

Knob wont push down,only when below freezing.Have forced and then it sticks down and I cant get my key out.If it is electrical why weather an issue?Looks like rod goes from knob to what?a switch or lever? Any quick cheap fix? Wont have car more than couple more years if lucky.Any suggestions? Don't want to rip it all apart.
