2006 Ford Freestyle engine surge problem

Today I found out that my car has been under recall for an engine Surge problem since 2012 I bought the car in mid January 2013. They owned the car in 2012 when the recall was put out. This means they knowingly sold me a defective car that needed a repair that could cost up to 4000 dollars and i have seen quotes for more than that so would someone tell me please what right do I have.
How can they sell you a car that they know is under recall and today they tell me they have been waiting for me to return the car for repairs when i didnt get the recall notice because i didnt own the car yet the Ford Dealership did.
