Only first Homelink button will work

I've read multiple forum posts and tried everything I've read and believe I have a unique problem, and hoping there is a solution here!
I have a 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid and two Liftmaster GHUs, one older (came with the house, at least 7 years old) and one newer one we replaced last year. Bot have rolling codes.
No matter what I do, I can only get the Homelink to recognize the older GHU (button #1). Per normal instructions, I do the remote/HL sync and it flashes rapidly, then syncs without having to use the "Learn" function with the overhead unit.
With the same steps, I can't get either button #2 or #3 to sync with the newer unit. The Homelink light only flashes slowly, then just goes out. Never flashes rapidly.
I've tried flushing all the codes on both the GHU and the Homelink, and still no luck. Not a huge deal, since I have the remote, but would be nice to get this to work. Very grateful for any guidance!
