when I drive down the road my Escape will act like it is in neutral and the rpms will shoot up. Also when I am going over hills the rpms will shoot up and before they go back down the car will screech and jerk. Does anyone know what is going on?

I have a 2001 Ford Escape XLS with a 3.0 4 wheel drive in automatic transmission when it shifts from 1st to 2nd you have to get up at 3500 RPMs before it wI'll shift then shifts to drive fine but has no overdrive after you drive it for about 20 minutes it somewhat shifts to second right but still ain't the way it's supposed to be and when you're trying to pass somebody no matter what your speed is it automatically wants to ship the first does anybody know what is wrong with it
