1989 Lincoln town car transmission

I have a 1989 Lincoln town car.In drive it won't shift above 40mph it revs.When i drive in overdrive it shifts and drives fine.Any idea what the problem is ? Thanks

    Maybe the shifter linkage is misadjusted or wearing and not selecting the gear selection correctly. It might be that the indicator in the dash needs adjusted. Beyond that a valve body issue could be in play but without testing and proving what is going on nobody is going to know.
