I have a 2010 Colorado with a 2.9L that throws a P0013 code and sounds like a diesel at an idle. I replaced the exhaust cam sensor , vat actuator , changed the oil , and reset the codes. it runs great until the second time you start it then it's right back to noisy idle. first start after reset you can drive for hours and it runs great at all speeds including idle... just don't shut it off. any ideas?

The variable valve timing system sets a pending code on the first failure that it detects and turns the light on when it detects the second one, so it has to be a hard failure. Problems with the actuator solenoids are common and so is plugging or debris in the oil passages and the camshaft actuator. Another problem that can occur has to do with wear in the camshaft bearing surfaces which can allow for cross bleeding of lubrication oil and variable valve timing oil and lastly there can be issues with the timing chain, tensioner and guides.
