Oil consumption - synthetic oil

I'm currently having the excessive oil consumption issue, but my dealer says the repairs are not covered because I've been using conventional oil instead of the recommended synthetic. Has anyone else been told this?

    While you didn't have to use synthetic, you did have to use a product that was approved for the GM dexos1 specification. Just using something approved for API SN and ILSAC GF5 wasn't enough and directly led to  large number of engine issues, especIally sticking piston rings which results in oil consumption issues.
