Car Buying Advice--Need a good, reliable, used car. Money is tight - cannot afford a mistake

I've been battling chronic illness for 5 years now. Savings are almost out. I need a good, quality, reliable car that will get me from point A to point B reliably for years, as I continue on to doctor appointments, multiple times a week.

I've heard used toyotas are good. I've seen many on craigslist for under $2,000 (early 2000 corollas). I can spend $2,200 max.  I don't know if they're as reliable as everyone says, and what the mileage limit is (should I buy one with 150k miles? 200k?  Are there better options out there?).

Any help would be appreciated. The last car I owned (2008 Hyundai Sonata) I had spent quite a lot maintaining, only to have the engine fail and now I'm pretty much screwed.

Thanks
