2001 dodge ram 2500 4X4 diesel after sitting several days the trans seems to not engage for several seconds in drive or reverse if I rev the engine it wants to move then slowly engages it has never banged in to gear when this happens could this be a converter issue or internal trans problem? Today after sitting 9 hours it started and went into gear fine outside temp 52 degrees.

That is sometimes called Morning Sickness. It is usually a warning sign that a transmission overhaul is in your future. I would consult with a trusted transmission shop in your area.

I once had an old Ford pickup that once started on a cold morning I would put it in drive and count to five seconds before it would drop into gear. For the rest of the day it would be fine. After a few months the five seconds turned into ten. I eventually sold it to a guy whose brother owned a transmission shop.

That's what I was afraid of, it only has 290,000 miles on it and has been a work horse for us for many years so I guess it is about time something major went wrong. Thank You for your time and opinion.
