Switching between hot and cold

Our Lincoln had some issues at one point and a mechanic made it so you switched seasonally between heat and A/C. Am curious where that would happen as it's time for heat... Very mechanically inclined, but my research makes me think I could just replace the DCCV and fix the issue?
