A/C turning on when dash control knob is turned to upper/lower vent setting

When I switch the air flow selection knob to the Instrument Panel Vent/Floor Vent, the A/C compressor engages and then disengages about every 15 seconds and continues to recycle until I turn it off. This setting should be for heat only, not A/C. Help!!!
