What about a chip or a programmer ? I'd want to take off that silly 130 mph governor and at least a few times run it into the 150 range where it really belongs. ;)

that's what i mean by "reflash."
I guess if taking the speed limiter off means that much to you, you could spend the money. Personally, I'd rather save the money AND keep my license.

I guess I didn't know what reflash meant. I'd only do a top-speed run on a vacant country HWY. Ask rorr, we have a few here in the Panhandle ;)

yeah, i realized I didn't explain what reflash was. For the volvo (and probably alot of other modern vehicles), a chip is not an easy task. It involves soldering onto the original ECU, which can result in an expensive mistake. So TME/IPD choose to "reflash" the stock ECU with their own program. Its more expensive than a traditional chip, but its considered more reliable.

The styling is unoffensive but there isn't really anything new, and the grille is a bit large. I can't get over those ugly warts on all the door handles. The interior is first-rate, though.

...that offers cars as boring as a night playing cribbage with Aunt Gladys? I deeply, deeply mourn the passing of the body styles Volvo carried from the 80s into the mid to late 90s. The way I saw it, Volvo was defined by these unique and interesting vehicle designs and now they have faded into the crowd of sleek look-a-likes. I would like to ask for a moment of silence...

With that said and done, I pray that I will be able to find a Volvo of that era when I have the room to store it and tinker with it.

I can't necessarily argue. My S70 was a sweet lookin' brick.

I think the V50 and C70 are pretty sharp in their own right, though.

I just built me a 2007' Volvo S80, just like I wanted and I have sticker shock !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My MSRP comes in at $64,685 :surprise: :surprise: :surprise: :surprise:

Well I guess I can scratch that one off my list !
I might as well buy a Cadillac Escalade ESV Hybrid if I'm going to spend that kind of dough. I'd could get one cheaper than a S80, like I want. :surprise:

I guess it's not meant to be, for me anyways. For y'all that can afford one I'm very jealous. :(

LOL, I didn't add any "roof" options like the Ski, Canoe, luggage racks that were available. I admit I added the $2800 rims because they are chrome and look better. I also off the top of my head thought the "Z" rated rubber came with those rims?.

Heck I'll just show you what I got....Hold on... ;)

So my point is yes I do want alot of options but who doesn't ? The car with all those safety features and "gadgets" is what pushed me over the edge to wanting one and is why the new 2007' Volvo S80 will always be one of my very favoritest cars. It's a bank vault on wheels. The new safety gadgets Volvo, now has makes the S80 look like a Bank Vault surrounded with "Special Forces" for security. ;)

Hopefully these new gadgets will trickle down to the S60 in the near future, and hopefully more will be added. :)

ROTFLMAO, yes I've always been that type of personality. It's either all or nothing. It's really hard for me to not buy the top trim w/ all the options for any specific model. I don't know why I'm like that, but I've always been that way. I must get that from my mother. ;)

I guess we will have to wait a few years to see the next Volvo S60. Does anyone have any idea what engine Volvo is thinking about putting in this car ????

    How bout the S60R ????

Do any of you guys/gals think they might use the Twin-Turbo V-6 out of the MKS to put in the S60R ? It would make since from a cost standpoint, wouldn't it ?

I personally am hoping a 1000 watt Dynaudio system will find its way into this car, along with all the gadgets we see now in the S80. I also could handle a cloned S80 interior, but having the option a 6-speed manual. I remember sometime back Volvo was testing a four-hundred and twenty something horsepower Turbocharged I-5 in the V70. :surprise: I wonder if that engine is still a possible application ?

I tell you guys one thing a new S60R with that kind of power, and a price tag under $50K loaded might prove to be a good choice for any Volvo enthusiast. :)

I'm also still waiting to see if volvo will do the right thing and make us a C-70R with AWD and lottsa power. I tell you one thing I wouldn't have to worry about a Buick Velite if such a car found its ways to our shores. :shades:

I have read rumors that a "R" version isn't out of the realm of possibility. :D

"Time will tell I suppose"

any chance of volvo coming out with a diesel in the next couple of years?

My wife has wanted an XC90 since it was introduced, and I'd like to get her one in 20 months when her Pacifica goes back to the dealer, but the benz suvs are the only diesels on the radar at the moment that we'd consider. If volvo would come out with a diesel xc90, it would be a strong contender for our consideration.

so how about it, volvomax? Any grumblings of such a thing happening in the near future?

One would think Aston, would be profitable

you would think ... but, then again, when you sell in such low numbers, do you ever really recoup development costs? Possibly not. At least not at their pricepoint. Someone like Ferrari or Lambo, who sell cars priced at least double of Aston, is a different story.

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

  • rockyleerockylee Member Posts: 14,014
Well sell at double and make the cars justify that price. Adding horsepower doesn't cost that much money. If they can't make it profitable then what's the sense of owning them ?

    Rocky
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,312
that's exactly the point. I'm not sure who would want to own them, unless the buyer thinks they can make them profitable or gain something from owning them, as Ford did when they bought Jag, for instance. But, in the nearly 20 years since buying them, Ford has not been able to pull Jag out of the gutter, unfortunately.

The real sad part is that I've always dreamed of owning a Jag. :(

Ford eyes sale of Volvo cars, BMW interested, says newspaper

    Automotive News | 4:00 am, May 29, 2007

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) – Loss-making Ford Motor is planning to sell Volvo and BMW could be a possible buyer, a Swedish newspaper said on Monday, May 28.

The Goteborgs Posten daily reported on its Web site that a source within Ford said BMW has been studying a possible purchase of Volvo.

The Financial Times also reported Friday, May 25, that BMW was in informal talks to buy Volvo.

"We cannot comment on speculation, this is a question for our owner," said a spokeswoman for Volvo cars.

Ford bought Volvo in 1999 and it is now part of the US company's Premier Automotive group, including Jaguar and Land Rover.

Ford does not disclose results for its individual brands, but taken together its luxury line-up lost $327 million in 2006.

Merrill Lynch has said Ford could raise over $9 billion by selling the remaining luxury car brands.

Volvo CEO Fredrik Arp told Reuters in March that Ford was committed to keeping the Swedish carmaker.

    wow! that would be surprising!

Ford does not disclose results for its individual brands, but taken together its luxury line-up lost $327 million in 2006.

Thanks entirely to jaguar. volvo turns a profit, hence my would-be surprise at picking that as the company to drop.

Well, its not that less expensive isn't good, it's just that the article spoke in terms of "a few thousand dollars south of the V8 model’s $47,350 price tag" and unless the T6 is just as well equipped as the V8 (or lacks only features that you wouldn't order anyway) that seems a little thin for giving up 26 hp. The better mileage might be a consideration.

T6 should be about $5k less than the V8.
Std equip will be close. The V8's 08 price goes up over $1,000.
V8 gets soft leather,a full wood dash, some aluminum exterior trim, and the PCC as std equipment.

Despite problems with our 2001 XC70, we think we will re-up soon with either current style XC70 or the new style. (Neither my wife nor the buff books think that the XC90 is preferable for what we use the XC70 for.)

We like the Volvo price points, room, and lack of pretension compared to what we think are the comparables: the E Class wagon which is in the high 50's and the 535X wagon which is roughly 67K. We don't think that Suburu, Saturn, or other small wagons are comparables. Saab, the original "winter car", might be but they have had 20 years to call Haldex for an AWD system and haven't done so yet. We live in New England so AWD is the way to go.

The Germans play the option game far more agressively than Volvo and their final price adds up quickly. So much so that you wind up asking yourself, who would would ever dare to put some firewood in the back or haul a Christmas tree home in a 67K wagon? Moreover, given the extreme rear slant on the MB and Bimmer they are less "wagon-like" and their cargo capacity seems limited. It seems that their rear windows are great for prep school stickers.

When I look at the fragmentary info on Volvo's web site, I don't see many new things in the new '08 wagon. Oh, sure the interior looks a little better and there is now a 6 cylinder engine but it comes with only a small increase in HP over the five cylinder. Unfortunately, I suspect that the AWD car is still heavily front wheel drive biased (I'd love it if the front to rear power ratio was more like 30% front and 70% rear; it would be far more fun.)

Volvomax and others do you see any compelling new features in the new '08? Better engineering, more safety, etc?
