180 degree thermostat be the default setting? I believe the stock thermo is 200. Also thanks for the link.
GM customer service has offered 100,000 miles and I asked for 150k. I didn't think about the 6 years. I'll ask next time I call. Thanks again.
Actually, the service manager is just doing his job, but I'm convinced this noise is not normal and will not rest until it is either fixed or a 2001 5.3 motor is under the hood.
Quad, yes, the logic is obvious. How can anyone be 100% certain of anything, when questions remain to be answered. GM needs to disclose what this "harmless noise" is. To the dealers credit, they are still investigating and I am keeping on top of them via email and cust service. When I get the TSB I'll pass it on. R
P.S. Can a 6.0L be dropped in a 2k 1500 Z71? heh heh
BTW, the stock stat is 195. With both in the open position...stock runs between 200 to 215 and 180 runs between 190 to 215. For the amount you're going to spend...$40, for 10 degrees? Plus with the HPIII unit, what will you program for in terms of degrees? just curious.
stat for running 93 octane is the 160. I really should get my thoughts together before posting. Seems like I have what meredith accuses all of us of having....Attention Deficit Disorder...LOL!!
If GM offered a 100,000 mile warranty, I would take it now. Get the warranty and then start back on them again. I believe the 100k warranty comes with 6 yr (actually 3 years added to your existing warranty). Don't forget the 0 deduct. plan (Major Guard).
I don't believe GM offers any kind of 150k warranty. Don't know for sure.
By-the-way, I go in Monday for my ping/knock/chatter/slapping, etc. (whatever it is). I'll post the results. However, I don't think the soaking will change anything. If not, I'm going after another (free) extended warranty and/or new engine (if they can't fix the one I have). Based on previous problems, this little knock is not that big of a deal unless it develops into a blown motor.
Monday morning I'm calling customer service to document the problem is still not resolved and I want it either diagnosed and fixed or a new motor or truck.
The reason I asked for a 150k extension is, I paid $1300 for an extended 5/75. GM offers the 6/100 to customers with the standard 3/36 warranty. I just thought I should be getting a proportional extension. However I'll take them up on their offer tomorrow and take it from there. Thanks!
Oby, the HPIII is on hold for me right now, but I'll definitely ask those questions to the tuner. Thanks again! Roger
the service manager will get back to me on Friday to tell me what is causing the noise. Last week he said it would be fixed by 11-17. Meanwhile, I plan to test drive a couple more new Silverados for ping and write down their serial numbers.
I know this is off topic, but has anyone experienced feathering in their front tires? Mine had to be rotated at 6000 miles....I'm putting on Bilstiens this week. R
Funny you mentioned that. My feathering problems began at 1100 miles with my General 255/70R16 tires. We replaced three sets, aligned, balanced and to no avail as the feathering continued. I had also installed Edlebrock shocks. Long story short, installed Michelin LTX M/S 275/70R16 and while the feathering did not stop, it is also not as bad rotating tires at oilchange, 4000 miles.
Got my truck back from the dealer today. The knock/ping is still there but not nearly as loud. I now believe the knock I have is possibly normal for the motor I have. I will test the next few days and post results. I also now believe this carbon buildup thing is real.
Also got the tranny reflashed and selt belts replaced, if any cares.
I got a question if you guys can help.
1. Is there a need to change the oil immediately now since the blow-out? If the carbon went out the exhaust I shouldn't have a problem right?
One thing I noticed on the way home that should improve mpg: The overdrive comes in earlier now--It shifts at a lower speed quicker thus reducing rpms. That sound right?
Also, the rpms at speed (75 mph) is about 100 less now.
If they put solvent in your cylinders overnite, unless they turned your truck upside down, the solvent is going to end up on the top of your pistons. From there, it's going to drip down to the rings. Since the rings have a gap, it seems reasonable that some of that solvent is going to end up dripping past them, down the cylinder walls, eventually ending up in the crankcase. That's just one aspect of the solvent soaking I don't care for. Of course, gasoline makes a pretty good solvent too, and so one good reason for changing oil frequently is because the oil gets contaminated by it. Another reason why a vehicle that runs on CNG or propane doesn't need oil changes as frequently. Whether or not you feel the need to change the oil is up to you. No one can tell you.
Are you sure it's not just pinging less because the weather is cooler now?
Ryan: I think I'm confusing myself here. My truck now shifts to a higher gear at a lower speed. The shifting before was fine for me, but now it seems to shift (2nd I think) quicker. It seems to drag or bogg a little now at lower speeds. I hope this all makes sense.
Quad: I agree with you. I'm going to change the oil this weekend, or sooner. No, I'm not sure about the pinging/knocking. I'm going to test tonight, now that the truck has cooled and back at home (I didn't drive today). I'll be able to test it tonight and post a follow-up. I also agree with the cold weather change. Temp. here has dropped 20 deg. in last couple of days.
After testing at home under my own conditions, the knock is still there--no change. So much for the carbon build-up theory. I guess I was optimistic yesterday and did not test long enough.
I beginning to think this knock/chatter is going to be classified as normal under GM specs. I predict that's the next thing I'm told when I tell them it's still knocking.
Top it all off: I have to change my oil now (only had about 1000 miles on old Syn. oil); the tranny is not shifting as good as it was; and I wasted two days. I should have left it alone.....
don't ya just hate that....but I think you should have the PCM reprogrammed cause engine lugging just puts additional strain thus shortening engine life.
I thought when they "updated" the tranny, like they did in my case, that all the newest programs were programmed in. So why should the tranny be lugging now? How do re-program the re-program?
According to the service manager (ding dong), he updated the system with the latest stuff, etc....What you think went wrong?
Also, if you have time, explain this PCM reprogramming thing so I know what I'm talking about when I talk to the service manager again. What's my options? Should I give him part numbers (I think you posted them earlier)?
Do you have the last work order from your warranty service? Could you check what it says regarding the program updates? I'm curious to see whether it is even on the work order from the dealer. Or did they even do it? The updates seem to be a "works for some and not for all kind of thing" almost like Bill Gates wrote the code.
To check if your truck has all the updates, the dealer will connect the tech2 unit which will tell him what's been programmed and what's not.
I don't have the work order yet. It was after regular business hours when I picked up the truck and the service manager said he would mail it. I should get it tomor.
Something has definitely changed in the way the truck shifts. It really doesn't bother me and I'm hoping for better gas mileage. If so, I'll leave it like it is. Unless it's causing unreasonable lugging, etc.
I'll post the numbers if they're on the order.
One more thing......I'll probably post this on the Silverado topic too, but what do you think of the K&N air filter. I got the hard sell today at an auto parts store. If what he said was true, I may try one......what you think?
I would like to start out with a resounding thanks to Ryan, Oby and a lot of others on these Silverado threads.
My '00 Silverado 5.3 Ext cab has gone through the full gammit of problems. It shakes at 70 mph (got the fix, but it still shakes) And the knocking problem. I've posted many times about this knock problem and have talked at length with the service department where I bought the truck about it.
I believe it was Oby who suggested new spark plugs. I tried the 4 post ones, and that seemed to help the knocking sound. But, the sound persisted. (this actually made it more difficult to convince the service guys there was a problem! figures)
Then after not reading the messages here for over a month, I came back to find the info about carbon build up. 3 days ago I went and bought some of the Techron addititive and the knock is about 95% gone!! I noticed an improvement in the knock and in power from the engine by the end of the first day. I'll return in a week and let you know what the fuel milage is doing (the truck seems to have gotten about 1.5 mpg less than 5000 miles ago, currently at 8000 miles, so we'll see if the cleaner helps that problem too)
While there are a ton of different fuel system additive cleaners available, I only tried the Chevron Techron and it worked. Along with cooler spark plugs. I can still get a very faint knock from the engine under load at 1500 rpm, but it's gone from normal driving.
As far as the K&N filter, I'm not sure if you're talking about their FIPK kit or their drop in replacement. Either way, a word of warning, with increased airflow also comes increased contaminants being allowed into your engine. I lost the link that I had where a mining company wanted to switch to K&N as the stock filters were costing them an arm and a leg to change out with all the dust associated with mining. They had switched 10% of their fleet to the K&N. After a month, they did an engine oil analysis and found that every single truck with the K&N had shown increased contaminants in the oil. If you're interested in increased airflow with the stock setup, I've added an Amsoil air filter to my Denali. The hp increase is minimal but with the increased airflow the throttle response is a little better but the contaminants are supposed to be less than with the stock filter.
Their online catalog and price list doesn't list a filter for the new style Silverado, however, they do make one. Just drop them an email and they will get back to you with a product number. Hope this helps.
Okay, I've done a little test drive with the new tranny program. The shift to OD (last time the tranny shifts) is at between 40-45 mph. If I'm into the gas a little, it switches at about 50 mph. For the most part it shifted between 40-45...
Another way to check is to accelerate until it shifts into OD. Once the TCC engages, decelerate to approximately 38-40. Does it remain in OD? During light acceleration, does the engine lug?
From what you've posted, it looks like it hasn't been done. The test I mentioned will confirm it. Shifting into OD at 40 is a little too early. My opinion.
Thanks for information. I should have my A%# kicked! My truck was fine before I allowed that screwball dealer to muck it up!
Here's what it's doing now.
Tranny: 1. Shifts are screwed up.
2.Another big concern now is when it shifts it clanks. There's not a jerk and if it were not for the clank sound at the shifts, it would probably be okay. I think I could live with the early OD shift.
3. Also, when I'm slowing down and the shifts are reversing, it feels like someone is bumping me in the rear. That make sense? Kinda like the tranny is catching up.
Engine:
1. The knock is now a constant ticking sound. Before I had the "soak" it only knocked when cold...never when hot. Now it knocks/pings/ticks all the time. I took a 6 hour trip last night and when I stopped it was ticking.
Not only did I waste two days of shop time, I now have to change the oil because of the soaking 2000 miles early. I also use Mobil 1 and you guys know how much that stuff cost. Plus it's about 35 deg. outside.
By-the-way......Ryan, you asked about gas mileage. I got about 18.5 last night running between 65 and 85. That's the first time I had the truck on the open road so I don't know what it would have been before the tranny reflash.
What a DUMBA#@ I am!....just when I was happy with my GM truck I have to go and screw it up!
Any help is appreciated.....especially the correct service numbers for the tranny reflash. So I can tell the idiot how to do his job!.............Thanks again....
I guess this clanking sound I hear now is a result of the reflash?
If you guys post the correct reflash coordinates, I'm taking the truck to another dealer. But this time I'm going to watch. I'm also going to test drive before I leave the business.
Since you a planning on going to another dealer, I would recommend that they do the procedure similar to the way they did Ryan's truck. They attached the tech2 unit and downloaded what version of the programs that were loaded. From there, they will be able to determine what should be updated based on your input as to the clanking sound, shift firmness, and shiftpoints. Sounds like the dealer tweaked the programming not knowing what he was doing. It's no wonder that some dealers refuse to reprogram without verification. Hmm...when you think about it, they don't verify problems that well either...
Did you check the GM vehicle calibration information site and input your VIN? It will give you an idea of what the program updates are/were available.
I did the same for the dealer's tech. He stated that they loaded all the updates and couldn't explain why it lugged at 38-40. I told him I needed another OD gear cause the difference between third and OD is too great causing the lug. He had a confused look on his face. I went on to explain that if he did as he said he did, why would the truck still lug in OD. He said that by depressing the accelerator similar to what you did, it would downshift to third. So I returned with the Denali and took another drive. I asked him to explain why it didn't lug at 38-40? He had no answer. Said would look into it when truck went in to replace rear quarter windows with new updated ones...yeah right...
I went to the GM calibration site and entered my VIN; a long list came up. Does this mean my vehicle needs all those changes/corrections? Does the GM calibration site connect to the computer system at the dealers?
No, the list that is provided are the available programming updates for your particular truck. It does not mean that you must or the dealer will make any changes. If you have a problem with the clank due to hard shifting, an update would probably help, or in your case to restore to the previous programming. The GM VCI only lists what's available to the dealer for a particular truck.
That's good. If I take that print-out to my dealer, it would blow his mind.
I'll probably let another dealer take a stab at it next week. Hopefully I can get it worked out. If not, will be good excuss to buy that 01 Z71. Hehe....

Also, the rpms at speed (75 mph) is about 100 less now.
John
Mine used to come on at about 35 mph. Now it comes on 50-55mph.
It seems to shift at higher rpms.
I had it updated due to shift lagging. And also i didnt like the OD coming on so soon.
Also in the morning it idles at about 750 rpm until it warms up anyone elses does that??? Its cold here (20 degrees in morning)
Ryan
