Need some help on something simple. Changed my oil for the 1000 mile plan, and to put it simply, i got oil all over the place. The drain plug is on the side of the pan, and when i removed it, oil shot out about 12 inches. When i remove the oil filter, oil squirted out everywhere. It seemed as though everything was under pressure. Is this normal, or did i do something stupid? Have been changing oil for years, and this has never happened. Is there an easier, or better way to do this? Any ideas would be helpful, since i plan on changing my own oil, as i have always done. Just figured out how to change the oil on my wifes mercedes, got the info from edmunds.com. You wouldn't beleive it. Filter is right on top of the engine, and you suck the oil out with a topsider. Will wonders never cease? I had that puppy up on a stand, and could not find the filter or pan. What a trip! Now it's a piece of cake.

I have had decent results with SILICON SHIELD,a brand from AMSOIL, the synthetic oil people. This is a liquid polish and is very easy to apply and remove. Also very long lasting as far as water beading and looks. Trick is finding a dealer in your area.

Made another 600 mile trip from Valdez to Anchorage AK and back. Mileage steady at 12 MPG. I think it's great for V10/4.30LS with 38" Super Swampers. I don't have any flat areas to speak of to check the mileage.

I can hardly wait to get a photo posted. Needless to say I love to show off the truck!!

Does anyone have any experience with the 'Do It Yourself' type brush on bed liners? Any suggestions and or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

My build date (week) has finally arrived (May 2). My question for any of the "have's" who have been through this long and painful waiting period is: when should I receive a VIN from my dealer. I would like to have all the insurance transfers taken care of the day my new truck arrives and need a VIN in order to get this done. Thanks for and info..

mainecowgirl: i ain't saying "congrats" until you actually get it. i don't want to jinx anything.

psmith: that must be a fearsome looking rig with 38" tires. will look forward to the photo. btw, i have been an annual visitor to your state for many years. friends live there (anchorage), and each year we go hunting, fishing, rafting, flying, etc. great state, only reason we don't live there is because it's too far away from family.

cwilliams: you already have a vin, you just need to give your dealer/salesperson a boot, and they'll get it for you. good luck

V-bldrs: You are too kind. I am just lucky that I didn't need this truck for any business other than hauling my hobbies around. You had a bit more of a reason to be agitated when yours took so long.

Sherwoodfor- Counting down the final 24 hours. I will let you know when it lands on Cowgirl soil so you can help breathe a collective sigh of relief.

Gettin' kind of excited here in the State O' Maine.....

I have a rectangular pan, ready to catch the the 'squirt' when you take the drain plug out..
My Ford Ranger and Windstar are the same way, so thats nothing new..

Also, Ford uses the 'anti drain back' filters to keep the oil in the top end for better lubrication on startup. I usually just twist the filter enough to let the oil flow down the outside of filter into the pan, wait a minute or so, then continue on..
  • sdmansdman Member Posts: 65
After draining the oil, I take a phillips screwdriver and punch a hole in the bottom of the oil filter, and let it drain completely before I twist it off.
  • lilelmolilelmo Member Posts: 144
Yep, first time I changed the oil in my V10, I 'bout took a shower in it. I have a 2-3 gallon catch pan (plastic). I loosened the plug and held the pan up close to catch the intial spurt. That much warm oil (6.5 qts) under gravity pressure shoots out to the side about a foot. I can only imagine what the diesel must be like.

Once the initial stream slows, I just put the pan down and watched it. The pan had to be slid sideways a little so I didn't miss the pan as the stream slowed. While that wass going on, I loosened the filter and let it drain a bit. I've often thought about puncturing the filter, I'm just afraid I'll go too far and hurt the screw threads on the engine where it attaches.

One thing though. The factory installed filter was WAY way too tight. I thought I'd never get it off. I ruined my old faithful filter wrench and my dogs learned a few new words. :-)

I've also found that when changing oil, if you don't remove the filler cap immediately, it doesn't seem to squirt quite as fast because of the need for air to go in the same hole the oil is coming out.

Best thing about it is there's no need to use ramps.

Mainecowgirl: Preliminary congrats. I don't want to jinx it either. I passed a horse show Sunday and I thought about you and wondered if you were a "have" yet.

Just got back from pulling a Yall Haul (Same as a U Haul for you folks up north). Pulled a 6' x 12' trailer with total weight of about 6000 lbs. from Oky City to Dubuque, Iowa with 35 mile head wind to Des Moines. Got 8.7, 7.2, 8.8, and 8.7 MPG. Tried to maintain speed around 75, sometimes went 80 and sometimes 70. Auto transmission shifted out of OD several times going up long hills but had no problem maintaining speed. This is the first time I pulled anything with the SD and was impressed.

    2K 250 CC V-10 auto 3.73LS

Some observations I made as a result of this trip .... The Automatic worked super. The V-10 pulled this weight without much strain. I was able to pass slower cars on two lane roads in Iowa without effort. If I were going to be pulling heavier trailers .... often .... I would surely purchase the Power Stroke Diesel. But for my use the V-10 seems to work fine so far.

For the benefit of those that are wondering .... Murtle Fay was not along on this trip .... I get .31 MPG City with her along so the trailer would be insignificant.
    Happy Motoring!

One nice thing about the PSD is the drain plug is straight down, so we psd owners don't have that problem with the oil spurting out of the pan. :)
If it was on the side like yours the oil would probly spurt all the way out from under the truck.
    Have a good one!

Found this site www.smartire.com they make a item that tells you when you have a low tire, or if it's getting to hot! For thoses of us that tow a lot that is a problem that's always on your mind.
  • dwucherdwucher Member Posts: 79
Your right about the filter being to tight. It took forever for me to get it off. Needless to say, that after being squirted, i was a cussing that filter. But it easy to get to, and should be no problem to change.

    Mileage, v10 5sp 4.30ls 4x4 cc sb. 1500 miles 13 so far, and a close 13 at that. 70/30 city/highway driving.

What can I say? How do you describe pure heaven?
I am speechless. This truck is everything and more. It all checked out. No rail dust. Every last little extra is as I want it to be. And it's soooo big. And sooo powerful. I feel pretty special sitting up there. I was driving home from the dealer and passed a Little League game on the way. I swear every one of those Dad's eyes turned to watch my truck go by! They know good-looking when they see it (I'm talking the truck here, of course.) Walking into my house tonight I kept turning back to look at it. It's beautiful. I'll let you all know how the first haul feels once I've broken it in......you can all yell YAHOO for the cowgirl now!!!!
  • goletagoleta Member Posts: 24
    YAHOO !!!! YIPPIE !!! WHO-AH !!!

I'm still a "have-not" for now. I'm so excited for you. I can just visualize your ride home. The head turning, etc.

Congratulations at last. I haven't sent many postings but I've been reading them all. Your situation just kept me reading them all, like a novel.

My wait is still in the infant stage of two weeks. I'm expecting a 250SD Lariat CC 2wd 5.4 auto., etc. in Harvest Gold. My dealer tells me their last priority 10 order took about 6 weeks. I hope to have mine by Memorial weekend.

    Again, congrats.

The truck was due to arrive 4/24/00. Was scheduled 4/4/00, released to from KY plant 4/10/00 Im told by the dealer it is railed to New York and then gets on the ramp truck within 48 hrs after arriving in New York. Im in Eastern MA. Can a trace be done to see where the truck is? Dealer says the superduties cant be tracked. When they arrive, they arrive. Doesnt sound true by what I've read the past couple of months. I tried BNSF but its not listed on the rail. I've heard trucks arent listed and then arrive at the dealer.
    Any help is appreciated. thanks

I've had my "beast" for about 3 or so weeks now. I've already put on a set of Kelly Springfield 315R7516 AT's (They look so much better than the regular BFGoodrich's everyone down here is runnin'). I have also put on a set of Warn 4x4 fender flares...Took me about 3 hours to do so...they look so cool. Had X-Liner put in also. The guys at River City X-Liner down here in San Antonio did one heck of a job. I also put on order front and rear replacement bumpers made of sch 40' 5" pipe. Take a look at the bumpers at www.ranchhand.com.

Sorry for the long post, but just wanted everyone to know that my truck was a late Christmas present worth waiting for.

00' F350 XLT 4x4 CC...with everything but the snow plow package (Would have gotten that, but we don't get very much snow here in San Antonio)

Take care everyone, and keep on truckin'

I wasn't saying anything until you've actually DRIVEN your truck home..

I still look back at my truck every morning as I'm walking into the building at work.. Being a techie, not many folks have trucks in the parking lots, let alone something as big as the SD..

My truck doesn't turn that many heads when on the road though.. Being a white truck (my preference), it looks just like any another contractor truck...
Who knows, maybe a cool graphic or something may be in my future..

Thanks for the info on amps and the electric brake outlet that comes with the trailer tow package. I ended up buying 25ft of 8 gauge wire, a 60amp fuse and a receptacle plug. Fabricated bracket and replaced electric brake outlet. Ran wire under truck up to battery. [found a good place to connect to power on a terminal under hood on passenger side inside fender right next to battery]

These trucks are awesome to work under! I can fit!! (But needed a ladder to work under the hood :)

Goleta- Thanks for the thoughts. I remember when I posted here four hours into my wait! I got a few chuckles from the gang here on that one. As you have undoubtedly read many times before, it is well worth the wait...and I've only driven 34 miles in mine. Be patient and just keep reading here. It's a nice way to while away the hours...Good luck!

Bess- You've always had nothing but kindness headed my way. Thanks. And I'll bet your truck turns more heads than you think. It's not the color that makes these things worth looking at.

Your excursion with the V-10 and 3.73 rear will not tow in overdrive. I suspect that's just the way the transmission is programmed. Our trailer is a #7500 30' TT. I've only towed it with the SD only a few miles with the same set up, it didn't seem much different. Even when it is not towing, it seems to downshift going up some hills. I've hear of changing the chip and the downshifts will be more crisp and possibly at higher rpms, but then you may sacrifice ride quality. I would consider it in my SD, but the wife drives the excursion and I don't think she would like it at all.

I haven't tried to spin the wheels on dry pavement, but I suspect I would not be able to.

adubahbi: I think your method sounds like a pretty good way to go.

Oil Changes: While the PSD drain plug is on the bottom, when you take it out, the oil comes *gushing* (major emphasis on gushing) out. When I pulled the plug out last time, I was ready for a lot of oil, but what I got scared the bejezus out of me.

I have one of those plastic oil catch pans that has the funnel shaped top, and hole in the center that you take the little screw plug out of to let the oil drain in. Trouble was, I forgot to pop the other little plastic cap that let's the air bleed out as the oil goes in. The top of pan was filling up faster than the oil was draining into the little hole in the center! Almost had a disaster on my hands till I realized my mistake and popped the cap to let the air come out. Whew! Could you imaging the mess 15 quarts of used oil would make on the garage floor?

I had asked my wife to stop at Schucks and get me an oil filter (the local Schucks carries Mobile 1 filters that fit the PSD). They were out of the Mobile 1 filters, so the kid sold her a FRAM filter. No way is one of those cheap things going on my truck. I ran over the Fred Meyer where they carry Purolator filters. When I got back and put the Purolator and FRAM filters side-by-side, I saw that the FRAM filter was almost 2 inches shorter than the Purolator! Talk about cutting corners.

yippie-kai-yeah! the eagle has landed. next to lewac, you've had about the worst wait of any of us. enjoy the new rig. make sure you go by lots of little league games to get maximum headturnage. i'm sure your horses will be the envy of all the barn crowd too....
  • mainecowgirlmainecowgirl Member Posts: 103
I don't think I come close to the Lewac saga, but it does feel good to have it finally parked in the barnyard. Just came in from a spin. All the local truck drivers are turning their heads too. I should have gotten one of these long ago!! Thanks for all the words of support. They all have meant a lot.

From the distance, your checking out the truck, knowing it's a SD from the TT Mirrors. Your not just another Contractor Truck when your driving a SD, you stand out more. When I see those mirrors come down the road I'm always looking, course it's a bit of a let down, when it isn't a crewcab, but what can I say.....Your always looking to see what attachments they have that you don't have or vice-versa. Looking back at our posts in the last few months, we don't really have a lot of complaints about the actual trucks, they are mostly about the PR treatment we are getting from Ford. Just turned the 3K mark, driving it abit more then I planned on, it's getting to be the all around Family Truck..advantages are Roomy,Rides like a Lincoln, gets better gas mileage then my 98 Durango (dodge has a problem) more storage, looks great, you sit on top of the world. disadvantage...small parking spaces, but then again, you can park your front tires on the trunk of the car in front and your rear tirres on the hood of the one in back. Sorry about being long winded today, Wishing you all a Great Day & a Better Day tomorrow driving all your new Trucks...
and for those still waiting, don't let anybody tell you it's not worth the wait......it is...and thats from somebody that waited 6 months......

I've seen a lot of postings for the V10 mileage and some 5.4L manual trans. mileage.

Can I hear from those who have (or know about) the 5.4L with auto. trans. about mileage?

F250 SuperDuty CC Lariat 5.4L Auto. 156wb (California)

    Thanks
  • ljutefiskljutefisk Member Posts: 12
    goleta-

    I have a y2k 5.4l auto crew cab 4x4 w/ 4.10LS rear. I'm getting 12.4mpg avg. On interstate trips I get almost 16 mpg.
  • qmeisterqmeister Member Posts: 14
I have a Y2K F-250 5.4, 4wd w/supercab and full size bed. I have been getting 11.4 mpg in town and around 15 highway. I also have a large truck cap on the back that probably adds to my drag. I have a K/N air filter on order to see if that helps the mileage any.

Read with interest Wildside1' comments on hauling.
I'll be highway driving mostly, some "city", then towing stock trailer, tandem axle contractors trlr. sometimes, until later next year.
Was thinking the V-10 fine..., now wondering because...
plan to buy and tow a 5th-wheel travel trailer all over the US after next year.
    Decisions, decisions..
    Suggestions welcomed.

Make that "here in NE Georgia" not "hear"
  • lilelmolilelmo Member Posts: 144
    mainecowgirl: I'm proud for you!

I had to snicker at my friend at the office yesterday. He drives a 2500 4x4 Chebby Sub.. He walked in looked out my window at his & my trucks sitting side by side and said, "your truck makes mine look like a toy! It's almost 3' longer!" I just grinned.

I too get a kick out of driving to Little League practice and watch all the "would like to haves" smoking over my 250 CC 4x4. Most common comment: "That's a big truck!" What can I say?

I've gotten real used to that funky sounding V10, but what really sounds good is when you slowwwwwly back up or take off and it just burbles with a nice sweet sound.

Gas is back down to $1.25 hear in NE Georgia.

Last thing: I've noticed a certain camaraderie among SD drivers around here like none I've seen other than among motorcyclists. Everyone driving a Super Duty speaks to everyone else in one. Cool.

bowhuntwi: Thanks for the encouraging words. My build date (week) was yesterday. I really don't post many threads but I really enjoy what folks have to say about their trucks and the accessories they are adding and the looks they get when driving. I think the new SD is "look" in full-sized trucks today. I will be driving lost of highway miles from Va. to the Outer Banks of N.C. where our 2nd home and fishing boat reside. When I started to look for a new truck, which I have wanted for probably 7 years, the SD was the only choice. I fell in love with it as soon as I sat in the captains chair for the first time. I think that reading threads from like owners really makes the wait more bearable.....

mainecowgirl: I have been reading your threads for what must seen like forever for you. CONGRATS. Enjoy your truck.

    lilelmo,

I had to practically give tours to people wanting to see my truck for the first two weeks. I had groups as large as 8 men follow me out to the truck to look at it. They would all have to sit in the front and then the back. They would look under the hood and underneath. Then I would pull out the mirrors to their extended positions and they would gasp. The funny part is that the first superduty I saw was here on base. It was a G.I. truck. I had no idea what it was or who made it. It just looked great and I wanted to see it. I followed it till they stopped and asked if I could look at it. They were proud to show it off to me. I checked it out just like the guys did mine! Sat in the front, sat in the back. Looked under the hood. Crawled underneath. What a fantastic truck. It looked like a pickup truck on steroids. After that I had to have one. The military trucks are 4X4 F-350, crewcab, longbed, auto xmission with the 5.4. Best pickup trucks we've ever had.

I had the first privately owned superduty on base when I pick mine up in Nov 99. Now there are at least 5 others. The word (and the look) spreads quickly.

I just returned two weeks ago from a 4491 mile trip out to the west coast from Minnesota and back with my Y2K 350 4WD Crewcab SWB dually V-10 Auto. Picked up a 3000 lb truck camper in Yakima and had it on for about 2900 of those miles. I had 412 miles on this motor when I left, it was a good break-in and I was totally impressed with how easily this truck handled the mountains, despite head winds of 30-60 mph the whole way. Just set the cruise at 65 or 70 and let it go. Had to love mileage over the Continental Divide of 9.5 with that 3000 lb, 11.5 ft high camper on on the return trip. These are indeed great beasts!! Heads were turning at me the whole way too, despite the west appearing to be Dodge country.

No one here will recognize the name, but I belong to the group that was one of the first to sound off on this topic back in the summer of 99. Just wanted to check in and see what was new on the topic and how everyones wait was going. Just to make a lot of you feel better; I waited 7 months and 2 weeks to get my 99. FYI for anyone still deciding on engine choice: I love my truck, but went with the 5.4 and wish I would have went the V-10. The V-10 has that extra power and there is virtually no gain in gas mileage. Thanks for letting me check back in.
  • mjemje Member Posts: 33
Sorry, made a mistake in above post. It was the summer of 98 when my truck was ordered, not 99.

    To All,

Picked up the beast last Thursday. When I walked on to the lot I spotted it from a distance. What an impressive vehicle. I went over it with a fine tooth comb and found one small scratch in the passenger door.

The ride home was tremendous. All the heads turning and the looks of amazement at the size of the truck (2K,SD,CC,4X4,SRW,SB,V10,3.73 ls,Red clearcoat).

Mainecowgirl: Congratulations on your new ride. It's a great feeling to finally get them, isn't it?

My first tank of gas was at 10.7 mpg. I was surprised because I couldn't keep my foot out of it. Awesome power!!

My only disappointment was the passenger side mirror. I cannot believe they didn't put convex mirrors on that side. I read with interest the post about the Excursion mirror and will install one of those. Also, I plan to get the K&N and cat-back system soon.

To all that are waiting....be patient. It's well worth it! Hang in there!

All I gotta say about these babies is that they're awesome! :)

Both driver and passenger side mirrors have a larger, standard mirror and a smaller convex mirror. I'd check into those...

Thats weird, my brothers name is the same as yours. I started with a F150 and pull a 27' Terry Resort. I chose the sc for several reasons. It fits in my garage, I think it looks better, my kids are 1 1/2 and 4 years and I rarely carry extra adults, finally it is easier to park your camper in some campgrounds. I am in Coast to Coast but also enjoy several of our local state campgrounds. I can guarantee there are some nice spots that I could not get in with a longer truck. My truck is 99,sc,4x4,V10,3.73. You will be flat out amazed at the difference between the old truck, pulling and stopping.
    Good Luck.

Just thought I'd check in and say what everybody else who is a "have" has said. They are better than you could ever imagine. Anybody still without have no fear. The months of waiting fall away the second you set foot on the running board. I am sooo in love with this truck. Already have 400 miles on it after three days. That 500 mile break-in before towing will be here by the weekend. The world's a whole lot better place when you are looking at it from the cab of an F250SD!

Just purchased my Dream Truck F350 4X4 PSD 6 speed SB "Woodland green" and BOY! people (guys)are looking. I've been reading all the post about everyone's advertures, I felt I needed to put my 2 cents in. I have to peel my boyfriend out of it everytime we take a ride. Mileage is great. 18 mpg on the first tank and Diesel just went down to $1.55 in RI. Life is GREAT!!!!!!!
  • lilelmolilelmo Member Posts: 144
First, you need to understand that while I drive fast, I don't get on it really hard from a stop. I think it's hard on the truck. But... today I started to pull out into the road ahead of a Chebby coming from the left and I just "slapped my foot to the floor" like I used to do my old 5.0 F150. First time I'd done that in the 250 V10 4x4 w/3.73.

I did NOT expect what happened next even though I'd read about it right here. The sucker sat there and spun on dry pavement! I thought "da**." I had to let off on it to get started. I can only imagine what happens when you folks with the 4.10s stomp it.

I was pleased, but a little shocked. Cool! I love this truck.

Big Bessie is doing great. I've got 700 miles or so and I think the power has increased already. Mileage too! I have a very short drive to work so it's all 'in town' travel and the first tank was 7.5mpg. Now it's coming out about 10. Will probably make a higway trip this weekend to check that out. Last one was an even 14.

I posted a couple pictures on that site: www.picturetrail.com/summitx Nothing fancy, just a plain ol' White 00 Crew V-10. Wish it was a clearer day so you could see how beautiful Bozeman is! I'll post more later.

I've noticed a noise, though, when I punch-it, let up, and punch it again while it's gaining power. You can only hear it with the driver side window open and it sounds like it's coming from right under the drivers seat. Kind of a sputtering noise like an exhaust leak or something. I haven't even looked it over yet but I'm wondering if anyone has heard the same thing. I'll probably take it in next week.

I haven't even looked it over yet but I'm wondering if anyone has heard the same thing. I'll probably take it in next week.

How do you get into the line of work that your brother is in? It sounds perfect for me. I would love to do that for a living. Thanks Greg

Dealer promised me my beast by the end of May, and know I just sitting around hear looking at the calendar every day. 00, CC, SB, V10, 3.73LS, TT-Mirrors,Tow Pkg, Camp. Pkg, black Lariat. Congrats to all who have just picked up their truck. "Mainecowgirl" you mentioned in your post the break in for towing is 500 miles. Is that for large loads or for any towing? Have a 3000lbs boat I am leaving in storage until I pick up the new truck. If it is true I guess I will Have to take a trip up north the first weekend I get it just to put the mileage on it.
