Mercedes-Benz prepares the next-gen PHEVs under the EQ brand

Upgraded powertrains, extra power, more torque and a nine-speed automatic gearbox. This is set to be the package of the models manufactured under the EQ sub-brand. A high-performance 13.5-kWh lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt battery (li-NMC) will store energy enough for approximately 50 kilometers (31 miles), 15 kilometers more than the second generation of PHEVs. The third generation of the electric power unit will provide 121 horsepower.

Autocar claims that the first of the portfolio to pick up the new technology is the S-Class sedan, that will get the all-new S560e variant. Under the bonnet of the luxury automobile, there will be a 3.0-liter six-cylinder petrol engine, assisted by the electric motor, to replace the S500e.
Two E-Class PHEVs, one with a four-cylinder diesel power unit and another one with a four-cylinder petrol engine, will be launched soon after that, reaching the customers by the end of 2018 in Europe. The United States of America is getting the new variants around the mid of 2019.

2019 will bring the C-Class PHEV. The mid-size sedan is set to receive the same four-cylinder diesel engine as the E-Class PHEV. The future A Class with a plug-in powertrain, made up of a 1.3-liter engine engaging the front axle and a 90-horsepower electric motor driving the rear one, will arrive as well, just about the time Audi will get the company’s A3 e-tron ready.

The next-gen GLE will also be getting the power combo, so the GLE 560e will be one of the variants available. The GLC hybrid SUV is also on the waiting list.
