it has to be something simple not just a bad transmission

2001 mazda tribute lx v6 4wd has no forward gears, but reverse works just fine. From my experience the first sign of a bad automatic transmission is reverse gear related then L2 and so on. No codes ,dummy lights, burnt smelling or low fluid levels either. what is going on?
