Loss of Acceleration

Was driving my 2009 Ford Escape and lost all acceleration. Wrench symbol lit up, pulled over, turned off engine and waited about 2 min. Turned back on, the wrench symbol was off and I had full acceleration again...for about 1km, then lost acceleration again...went through the same routine as before. What's going on??
