Best 4x4 Pickup for bush (logging) Work?

ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
a chevy man. 1500 LS Z71 pkg (good on highway and trails) with the P265 tires. I have an ext cab 4dr Z71 ls with the 5.3 (you can still get the 4.8 with everything) itll hold up well. You said u only need a small V-8 and the 1500 would probably suit u better than a 2500 because gas milage would be a heck of alot better. My only suggestion is drive them all i know my chevy is by far the most comfy truck out there.

Good luck

I drive a 2000 Sierra 1500 ext cab Z71 4x4 short box. Nice truck for the guy who doesn't do much off roading. It is not a truck for serious logging work. The suspension is way to soft. They are nice truck if they aren't going to be abused.

I am going to get flamed for this but I would buy the 2001 Dodge Ram 1500. You stated you don't expect to carry heavy loads so you really do not have a requirement for a 3/4 ton and they are more expensive. The Ram has a solid front axle and offers more ground clearance. The 5.2 litre engine is good and will not cause you any problems. The five speed manual removes any transmission worries. Dodge has had problems with their 4 speed auto transmissions.

I don't like the IFS for serious off road work. you stated you have had problems with your 96 light duty Fords and they are still using the same front end. The new GM trucks are nice however they are built for the 95% of the population that thinks going off road is driving on the lawn. I take my truck off road but I take my time and I treat it with respect because if I break it I have to fix it. If someone else was paying the bills then it would be a whole different story. I hope this helps.

Ford has a completely different front end on their 97 and newer F-150. The old twin-I-Beam is history. We have had much better luck with the newer Ford F-150's.

My mistake I was thinking your trucks were the new style Fords.
  • RoclesRocles Member Posts: 982
There was nothing wrong with the old I-beams.

....Growing up here in ILL. farm country, most either go with the new fords or the dodges. Reason is that the "boot" covering the front chevy's axles are prone to being punctured by corn stalks or other debri in rough country. The solid axles on the Ford SD 250 and Dodge are much more durable for this type of useage.
Another thought, due to useage, would be to order an open differential and then install an aftermarket "locker". LOCK-RIGHT and DETROIT both make units for these trucks rear ends. Of course I probably don't have to tell you about swapping out tires to some BF Goodrichs' to increase sidewall strength to resist punctures. Good luck.....

If you are worried about sticks, stones and stalks, and actually going thru the bushes, you might want to go with the Dodge, just because its the only one that gives you a solid axle. Getting a Z71 from Chevy will give you all the skid plate protection you need, if that gives you the peace of mind. I've seen GM 4x4's get the boots torn as stated, but none with skid plates ever had probs.

The Chevy with 4.8 will by far give you the best gas mileage. it will probably be substantially better than the Dodge 5.2. Power would be a little better. I would suggest an automatic if possible. Automatics are so much easier to drive, and MUCH easier on the truck when in serious offroad conditions. been there, done that--if i had the choice, they can keep their stick shifts!!

WOrk good on my 00 Z71. A truck blew a tire and i hit it and my skid plates sure saved my underneath they have rubber marks on em but no dents.

Cdean is mistaken, the Super Duty has a solid front axle; will have a beefier 5speed then the 1/2 tons; the 5.4 should be strong enough in a regular cab and I'd bet the price will be very close to a similar 1/2 ton. My .02 cents.
  • cdeancdean Member Posts: 1,110
we weren't talking about the Super duty, Modv, we were talking about the half ton.

Yes, a stripped down 3/4 ton Super duty will be close in price, and would be a damn good truck. Fuel consumption would probably be the worst, thats probably the only downside to that option.

A nice XL can be had for 19 thousand. That includes the supercab-2wd. It almost pays to go heavier anymore.
  • modvptnlmodvptnl Member Posts: 1,352
If I'm mistaken I will be happy to retract but choice #2 in the very first post clearly shows an F-250SD.
  • cdeancdean Member Posts: 1,110
    You are mistaken. Its #3.

And we have been all talking about halftons. sorry to pick nits.
  • modvptnlmodvptnl Member Posts: 1,352
Dude, you're getting goofy on us. The Super Duty is clearly #2 on the list behind 1 and 1b (2 F-150's) Number 3 is the Dodge 1/2 ton.

"And we have been all talking about halftons" GEEEZ a guy starts a topic, asks about a particular vehicle and YOU decide it's only about half tons.......Boy, we think highly of our selves don't we? LOL!!!!

my personal experiences with 2500 dodges/cummins and 5sp. trans has been excellent since 1989.
i have been a big believer in UNDERLOADING work trucks and have been rewarded many times over by using 2500's vs 1500's in my land surveying work ie 100k in 3yr work w/o any repairs! i don't abuse my trucks, but i sure don't baby them either

In trying to be witty (I said trying)I alluded to posts 26 and 27 as being sort of kinky between those two. Ryan went balistic and Rocles played innocent, sort of like post 38. It was fun while it lasted.
