What happens when a CPO vehicle ages out of the program?

This question is spurred by a specific vehicle I'm interested in, but could apply to any manufacturer. What happens when a manufacturer-certified pre owned car ages out the certification requirements?

Say for example that a certain car maker certifies vehicles no more than 4 years old, and a dealer has a 2014 CPO model on the lot. Do they need to sell it by December 31st, 2018 or does it stay certified into its 5th year in January 2019?

Obviously nothing has changed on the car, but the salesperson is going to have a hard time explaining why the vehicle qualifies for CPO even though it's now one model year out of compliance. Do they send these vehicles to auction?
