Airbag Retrofit Discussed Before, But Actually Ever Been Done

Whether to install an airbag in a car that never had one has been discussed at various times before on other forums, but invariably it has ended up over the years with someone saying (probably accurately) that mechanics wouldn't want the risk and for someone to market such a product they'd have to destroy a signficant number of cars for each specific model approved for installation.
The question is this: Has anyone in the history of humanity ever retrofitted a SRS (supplemental restraint system / airbag) on any vehicle which never had it before, and who did it? If you don't know, or know but don't know any specifics can you point us to the right direction?
