Backup camera question

I just purchased a 2011 GLK-350 with low miles and when I programmed the backup camera to activate when I put the car in reverse, nothing happens unless I turn on the radio or open something else on the console screen. Is this my only option? With previous vehicles all I had to do was shift into reverse and the camera worked. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for any direction you can provide that is not in the manual.

Is this an aftermarket backup camera? The fact that you need to turn other things on, makes me think it's a power supply issue

From what I can see that appears to be correct, the COMMAND does have to be turned on to receive the camera input. I take it that you have both the regular owners manual and the COMMAND manual?
