another transmission question

2004 Silverado 1500 5.3 4x4. After driving a few miles 10+ when i stop or get into 1st-3rd gear it will slip out of gear and sometimes will not go back into gear. When it slips out of gear and i dont not let off the throttle the truck will start to bog down and die. In order to get the truck to shift i have to kill it then crank it back up. and it'll shift fine for a while. I have no trouble at high speeds. Any help would be great. Thanks
