Check Transmission light blinks and transmission wont engage

Sometimes with i turn the ignition the check transmission lights flashes and the transmission doesn't engage, If the turn the ignition off and one it eventually engages and I can then drive. The light does not come on when I/m driving,
Any suggestions on what to do to fix this issue?
