Traction control light intermittent

I own a 2012 Chevy traverse the traction control light is intermittent check engine light comes on the car vibrates slows down shifting is abnormal smell of gasoline in the cabin until the check engine light turns off

    This is an unsafe situation when driving on the freeway with children. I've been reading the forums and it looks like this problem has been going on for a long time. I plan on  taking the car into my local mechanic but I don't want to spend a lot of money. Does anybody have any advice on what the problem could be?
