Mechanic's diagnostics: "Performed antilock brakes system diagnostic procedures. The ABS system,VSC system, and brake system warning lamps are on. Performed initial inspections and scanned all modules for stored fault codes. No codes are stored and the skid control will not communicate.Appropriate tests made. The skid control SCU is faulty.
Replace skid control SCU. Cost $4,500." Could this be for real, or can it be something simpler and cheaper?

Did a quick google to find how much the SCU cost. $875 And it's not likely that it's as simple as pulling out the old one and plugging in the new one. Probably a lot of diagnostics on the entire system. Could be that some other part of the system caused the fault in the SCU, so you can't plug in a new one and hope. Everything probably has to be checked and labor/diagnostic costs pile up quickly. It's a complex system.

I'm not surprised that the number is in the range of multiple thousands.
