ignition issue. engine tries to start with no key in ignition

1986 nissan king cab d21 z24 engine manual xmssn.
tried start vehicle. no noise . dome light bright. hooked up jumper cables from running vehicle. tried start no turn over. let set 10 min to re charge battery. tried start . got a few labored turns of engine. let set another 10 min. tried start few labored turns then nothing. removed key from ignition and checked jumper cables. with no key in ignition could hear engine trying to turn over. removed jumper cables. nissan stopped . jumper cables hot to touch.
I need real battery due to age..... but now I am wondering why the ignition circuit is still open with no key engaged. should replace starter/solenoid.? is there a relay I should replace?
