Rear brake installation - upside down?

I recently detected a howling sound from the rear of the vehicle. Dealer said the new brakes were installed upside down. Mechanic who installed them, not dealer, is going to look at it tomorrow, but is unsure what dealer service is talking about. Is it possible to install anything on rear brakes upside down?
