Shifter assembly

The other day I got home and went to shut off the engine in my 2006 Jeep Liberty Limited and found the key would not go beyond the off position. The engine shut off, but then I found the shifter handle would not engage in PARK. I could move the lever to any position and it would operate the car, but the ignition key would move far enough to be able to remove it. I thought that maybe it was the interlock cable that required replacing, but after the shop attendant looked at it, he said the "fix" was to replace the entire shift mechanism, cables, solenoids, etc. He said after further investigation, the entire assembly was the only way to purchase the parts needed to fix my problem. To add salt to the wound, finding this assembly would take 5 to 7 business days to get it to Arizona. With an estimated $1300 repair bill staring me in the face, I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue.
