Transfer case binding

what would cause a transfer case to bind after changing out the enconder motor? The truck binds to one side when shifting from park to reverse and then binds the other way when shifting from neutral to drive. Any answers would be good so i can narrow down this problem. and yes the truck will not shift into second gear.
