Axel Ratios

rockfive01rockfive01 Member Posts: 3
I am preparing to purchase a new Dodge Truck. My
only problem is trying to decide between the 3.54
and the 4.10 axel ratio. Can somebody explain the
differences between these ratios? Am I correct to
believe that the 4.10 will respond quicker, but be
slower than the 3.54 (top speed)? Any help will be
greatly appreciated...

The 4.10 will make your truck quicker. Since most of these trucks are governed to around 100 MPH I don't think 4.10's will make your truck slower on the top end, it would just be pulling more RPM's at top speed. You will lose a mile or two per gallon with 4.10's. One thing to remember is if you go to taller tires now or later with the 4.10's that's almost like having the higher(lower numerical) gearing.

I like the highest numerical gearing you can get(4.10's in this case) for the quickness and a little bit more ease in towing. Most of the time the gear ratio will affect the tow rating.

    3:73 and 4:10 would be close....but 3.54 and 4:10....get 4:10

3:73 is the lowest I would want in a pickup. 4:10 (as said) will give you more off the line power and towing power....and high end will not be noticed in a truck.....unless you plan on bypassing the limiter and go racing at 150MPH?

4.10 for pulling and performance, 3.73 good all around, 3.54 good on mileage not as good performance and weaker pulling. Just my 2 cents...

is the perfect all around gear...but with OD..get a 4:10..

anybody wanna swap a 3.73 for a 4.10?? Taller tires have made the truck much slower, even with all the mods. I'm probably only equal to the smaller tires. Oh well...

with a K&N filter?..no thanks...If I wanted that I could take off my air cleaner....soak an old rag in oil...wring it out..and throw it over the throttle body...wallaahh!!...K&N air filter..

then watch the inside get crudded up(actual word)as it sucks the oil thru the intake..

    LOL

a light coat of oil, not dripping with it. This is probably a big mistake people make with them. Haven't noticed any oil on my throttle body, but then again I've only got 6500 miles on my rig. I've got just the setup for you - nitrous, whipple, k&n, gibson, and airplane fuel...whee...(_0_)

    high octane fuel..

I like power and fast...but the old oil soaked filter never did it for me..I know it increases power..(maybe)..but I can flip the air cleaner over and get better power and sound just as easy..and have no oil intake..

    No fun?

I'm the funnest guy I know!

    LOL

filter off completely...as in the good ole days!!
  • swobigswobig Member Posts: 634
does it do anything?? Wouldn't think it would. We get drums of methanol and once in a while I'll put a gallon to a full tank of gas and look out! Makes a big difference. Fun, but probably not very good as the engine tends to run hotter then...

rather the cover when flipped over leaves a gap of about an inch for additional air flow. This is on carburator systems.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
teh cover is curved down..when flipped over...it leaves a gap for more air..but is still sealed against the lid for dirt...

It adds a deeper 4 BBL sound..even to 2 BBls..and does increase air flow...

This is for Carbs..never tried it on throttle bodys.....are we that old dean?....nobody else has done this in the good ole days!??

guys started to drive it was either SFI or TBI, none of this 4 barrel stuff..some might think it was a new fangled type of shotgun...LOL

Ahhh..."flippin' the head"--we'd used to call it. I pulled that stunt in HS with my 69 Camaro. I guess carbs have been out of most cars for what?-10-15 years now?? Ah..the days....

My bikes still have them though....

to carbs, they are referring to carbohydrates...
  • swobigswobig Member Posts: 634
never seen the cover flipped like you guys said, but it sounds like it would work. Guess I need to get out more. Those were the days - some of this new stuff kinda scares me. Much easier to work on engines back then...

drawback is some cars didn't have enough hood clearance to fit the now taller air cleaner.

Yeah carbs are a thing of the past....probably for the better...no warm ups...no pumping the pedal..no flooding it out....but I still love 'em...(basically due to the fact the cars they were on are farr better (in ways) to what they make now!

    New fangled shotgun??

    LOL

just for grins, i flipped the lid on my old 350 TBI. power? maybe. Sound--boy, let me tell ya! that 350 was loud as HELL when you mashed the pedal and opened those butterflies up.
  • RoclesRocles Member Posts: 982
cdean had a 350? Go figure...;)

carbohydrates? HAHA! Good call obyone. People will confuse me for a nutrition expert, eh??

    mgdvhman,
There was another benefit to flipping the air cleaner cover over. In years '69 through about '76 or '77 the preheated air for emissions was the major killer in the mileage department. On my '74 Caprice wagon, just by flipping the air cleaner cover the mileage improved about 30%. (Unfortunately 30% of almost nothing is still nothing!) The MPG went from the high nines to the low thirteens.

Gawd, am I that old too?

Got a friend (talking about axle ratio's) who put a 2 speed rear end (10 speed) in his 1/2 ton. Was really kinda funny, but I'll bet he could have pulled quite a bit more with it...
