1980 GMC K1500 front u joint install

Hello, I installed a new U joint at the front of the front propeller shaft, where the propeller shaft bolts to the front axle. I am trying to install the retaining clips which are the outside type. There is a little machined tab on the front axle yoke, which is what the straps bolt to. The retaining clip must be installed over the u joint cap which seats between the front axle yoke and the strap. My question is: should the retaining clip avoid contacting that tab, or should it be installed behind the tab (that is, between the tab and the u joint cap)? Note: there is no groove in the front axle yoke and the strap.

The machined tab on the yoke is what holds the cap, that half of the joint does not use a spring retainer. The strap that bolts to the yoke only holds the cap in place inside the yoke.6
