1980 GMC K1500 front u joint install

Hello, I installed a new U joint at the front of the front propeller shaft, where the propeller shaft bolts to the front axle. I am trying to install the retaining clips which are the outside type. There is a little machined tab on the front axle yoke, which is what the straps bolt to. The retaining clip must be installed over the u joint cap which seats between the front axle yoke and the strap. My question is: should the retaining clip avoid contacting that tab, or should it be installed behind the tab (that is, between the tab and the u joint cap)? Note: there is no groove in the front axle yoke and the strap.
