I am looking to purchase a new truck in probably 1-2 months, and I need to get all the information I can to make a good decision. I've been reading as much as I can but I'm an admitted truck newbie and it is all starting to make my head spin.

Right now I will only be driving around town, but within a couple of years my wife and I will be moving to a ranch with horses (I've kept my last car for almost 11 years now so I need to plan ahead). We also have a small child so I have to be able to carry a carseat in the truck also.

So I've been looking at the F-250 4WD Lariat Crew Cab and also the Chevrolet 2500 HD Crew Cab (not sure of LT vs LS). I'd really love to hear good information (not just rants and raves) about the benefits of either truck (or others) and in particular the engine choices (I drive under 15k per year so I think the diesel probably isn't worth it) and any other options that might help with mileage (I assume I will have enough power).

I want to get all that I need, but don't want to overkill just for the fun of it, or undercut it and regret.

    Thanks in advance,

    Don

The diesel has a much more limited RPM range than the gassers. That is why the diesel needs the 6 speed.
