Help searching used car below 10k

Hi,

I'd like to buy a used car for a price below 10k. I am focusing on sedans because they are not too big (I live in NYC and have to park outside) and they tend to be pretty cheap. But I would consider something else if it makes sense.

My biggest concern is running costs, dependability and safety. I don't care at all about who cool or fast or sleek the car is. I will use it mostly on weekends to take day trips with my family around the NY area.

Questions:

1) What are the most dependable and low maintenance/cost brands/models?
2) What would be the maximum milage and car age I should consider?

What else should I take into account? Anything really important I am overlooking?

Thanks!!!

Get an 2017 Elantra. Your price point can be tough, but you can find one of those that isn’t too old. Condition and maintenance is usually more important than miles, especially since you likely won’t put many on.

And get something with smaller wheels and fatter tire sidewalls!

A Chevy Cruze could be a good fit too.

Thanks for the response! How do you check for conditions and maintenance? I am using Carfax as a website to search for used cares and you can select cars with service history and reported damages. Do you think that would be enough?

Car fax is about the best you can do, unless it’s a private sale, or from a same brand dealer that can show service records.
