I know my 5.3 is very quick. What yr tahoe was it JCM? If it was a 2000 it may have needed the trans update which makes shifting smoother and makes the OD actuivate in the 50-60 mph range instead of the 35-45 mph range. I know it helped my truck.

It was a 2001 Tahoe LT. The test drive was last saturday at Gary Lang in McHenry (since I know you are local). Maybe I'll try another. It was the biggest killer to the sale. We even considered the Denali just to get the same vehicle but more power.

I personally havent drove a tahoe so i cant comment on the power. Did you drive it?

    jc,
check out the gearing. they used to put 3.42s in the suburbans, which was ridiculously too tall for a 5000 lb vehicle.

I thought i read c/d and motortrend or someone do testing on the new SUVs (Expedition, Excursion, Suburban, Tahoe) and the Tahoe and outran everything with 3.73 gears.

If you think the new GM HD's lack power, I dare you to go drive a new 8.1. per Styling, from behind the wheel, (the way the hood is shaped) it almost looks like you are driving (gasp) a Dodge.

It had 3.73 rear end. I checked because I thought maybe a 4.10 would do it. I couldn't find a single one on his lot with a 4.10, so it must be pretty unpopular. By the way the Tahoe is no lightweight. I believe it was around 5,200# which puts it about 400# more than a silverado.

cdean I did take out the 8.1 in an extended cab dually (only thing he had an 8.1 in). Acceleration was decent but certainly nothing to put you back in the seat. The dually had a better ride than expected (I owned one before) but I was surprised at how quickly the ABS kicked in. The pedal also didn't feel hard enough (and , yes I've had ABS before). The pumped up hood of the HD series seems to fall short (design/styling) of what Ford and Dodge has done. I realize that this is only my opinion on styling. On paper the specs look good. I will give it credit for having an excellent (allison) transmission.

I don't think I answered your question-yes I drove it as well as my wife. This vehicle would be hers however and her opinion is what counts on this one. When it comes time to order the new crewcab, that' s mine.

JCM suggestion wait for the new trailblazer to come out. They are a bit smaller and will have the new inline 6

I need increased room in the back seat. The quad cab has done fine so far and for shorter trips it still will. On a long trip-several hours- it gets cramped for the kids which are getting larger than me. That gets me to a crew cab. For work, I'm already pushing payload capacity on deliveries. I'm figuring at least a 3/4 ton shortbox 4X4 crewcab. Right now I'd have to pick the Ford. It's a proven platform: chevy is brand new with all the brand new bugs. On paper it shows greater capacities but then again on paper I read a horsepower rating that I can't find in a seat of the pants test drive. So where does that leave the rest of the specs.

I seriously dont know why the tahoe didnt seem peppy. Leaving school today i figured id punch it since i havent in a while. Truck took off on me. I blew every car i past going home off the road today. I really cant compare it to your quadcab since i have never driven one.

Are you talking about gettting a supercrew or F250 crew cab?

....can be had in 250 or 350. Really aint too much diff except for spring rates for GVW reasons and the DRW can only be had in 350.

The 250 CC 6-3/4' box has been around. Most people that opt for the crew cab go all the way to the 350 and many to the 8' bed. The 172" WB is a real bear to manuever and I don't need 8' in the bed, just payload. As far as the dually is concerned, they are very stable etc...but try and put it in the garage or go thru a bank drive thru.

I do intend to take the tahoe out again because the poor performance doesn't make sense.

my father in laws F350 Powerstroke CC 8 Foot Box DRW before....and yes...it could be a bear!

I'm used to driving a cube van with a 15 foot box...so it wasn't that hard...but i wouldn't want either one for a daily personal driver.

every time I see a ford crew...it's an 8 foot box and always drw.

If memory serves me correctly the SB CC was available only in a 250 for 1 or 2 years BEFORE the Super Duties. The Super Duties always could be had in CC SB in 250 or 350. Pretty sure the DRW is only available on the 350.

A 350 can be had in srw or drw, long or short box. The thing with the crew cab is that the truck gets longer and heavier. The extra 800# added takes away from my payload.

    Mod,
You are correct, Ford offered the 250 Short bed in the pre-Superduty body style.

We own a 96 F-250 crew with the short bed. It makes for a good truck for shingle jobs on private residences. Throw in four guys with the tools in the back and an Apartment house in Roxbourough is done in one day. Just call in dumpster for pickup....
I personally wouldn't buy one again because we like long beds for our trucks but this one hasn't hindered us at all.

You know your ford work trucks. I may be in the market for a superduty 4x4 crewcab. The crew is needed because it will be a work/family vehicle and the kids got too big for the supercacb. The crew takes away 800# of payload and I'm concerned that I should opt for the 350. This would have the short box. Would the ride get much harsher with the 350 over the 250 or is it negligable in something that size?

Something to look at if you want a 250 crew cab is getting the camper package on a 250,I dont know if it available on a CC short bed but if it is it may be what you are looking for.The camper package adds a set of overloads that do not affect the unloaded ride.

J.D. Power and Associates 2000 Vehicle Dependability Study:

Lexus number one for 6th straight year, followed by Porsche, Infiniti, and Toyota, respectively.

Dodge, or any Chrysler product for that matter, were no where to be found in the top 20. Wait.... I take that back--Mercedes-Benz was #7. Sorry.

As far as the "most dependable, longest lasting trucks on the road" manufacturer, they were mysteriously omitted from the top 20, too!

Ford, however, did come in at #21. Of course, Ford had 48% more problems per 100 vehicles, but who's counting, right?

Drove a Ford V-8 2wd reg cab Long bed today. Nice work truck. We beat it up. Did some towing with it and that sucked. Used only the ball hitch on the bumper. Seemed like the trailer was making the truck lug. It would kick in power then lose power kinda wierd didnt use overdrive. Overall the truck had nice power and handled well. We did get it stuck on some railroad tracks too (long story). I would say its a good work truck

Reliability. Wonder what percentage of Lexus owners follow the proper maintenance schedule, verses the percentage of Cavalier or Escort owners? Would that affect reliability?

Who would trust any rating that classes a Toy T100 as a "full size pickup," when all it really is, is a full sized marketing scam aimed at those MANY "wannabe's" who have more money than sense?!

Sorry Big 3, TOYOTA is number 1!! At least there would some truth to the title. Especially when you consider posts referring to JD Power and/or Consumer Reports. They always rank many Toyota cars/trucks/suv/vans at or near the top of many quality/reliability surveys.
The Big 3 brands are usually rated poorly by the above publications and for good reason (poor quality/reliabilty, etc...).
In short, don't buy Big 3 unless you are a professional mechanic!

although the dodge trucks look good is but one factor in a good truck. they fall short due to gas guzzling underpowered v8s and a history of tranny problems. is a mojor factor in determining if you want to drop 28k on a truck.

The Dodge's don't guzzle much more gas than than GM, and is about equal to Ford. I have driven the GM 5.3, the Ford 5.4 and my 99 Ram Quad with the 5.2. Yes the offerings from GM and Ford have more power, but my Ram is in no way underpowered. The 5.2/5.9 liter engines from Dodge are more than adequate for 99% of the half ton buyers.

Having a 01' F250 4X4 SD CC V10, I can say I'm very happy with my truck. But I can't believe the T-100 people would try to compare to 'real' Trucks(Ford, Chevy,or Dodge). Come on guys when you get tired of loading your trucks with shopping bags and need to 'haul' something over 500 lbs. stop by your local Ford dealer, or Chevy, and Dodge for that matter. Oh, and by the way I've had zero problems with my Ford. If it's anything like my 79F-150 4X4, I'm going to be a very happy camper.
