My '99 Super Duty F-250 (That's a pickup truck.) with the 7.3L power stroke has a catalytic converter. (That's part of the exhaust system.) For purposes of power and mileage, does anybody know how to substitute a "Test Pipe" to insure that the converter isn't plugged?
Thanks obyone. I was going to try it with my wire welder but the exhaust pipe is stainless. To weld it you must have the inert gas. And then the source for the ss pipe.
JCW (The most creative automotive catalog) used to carry "Test Pipes" for catalytic converters. Unfortunately the Feds figured out that some of those tests were taking 50 or 60K miles for results. They gave JCW the choice of stop selling or court and lawyers.
So woe is me. I'm trying to figure out if my catalytic converter is plugged and no test equipment with which to perform the test.
On the Midas deal I'll probably have to wait until I move to Nevada.
If you can borrow a thermometer either contact or IR, check to see if the converter is substantially hotter at the back than the front, if so it is working. A working CAT is less likely to be clogged than a non-working one.

seriously: paint a line down the cat then drive it for a day. where the cat is hottest the paint will be burning off. Thats a trick for choosing the exact spot to cut in your own H-pipe on dual exhausts.
