Now back to the subject of the Toyota Tacoma vs Ford Ranger. ;-)
This highly informed remark should get the ball rolling--"The Ranger sucks. Too many TSB's. The Tacoma's too expensive, blah, blah, blah. Why don't we all just drive Ford Lightnings, because, as you know, anyone can't get one for $27,500, which is about 10 dollars more than my Tacoma cost me."
This room has fallen flat... The Ranger is the best compact truck on the market today. Better engine, better crash tests, better interior, better value all around. Hope you TRD boys are enjoying your open axles and 3,000 dollard TRD stickers. Hope you enjoy the outragouse price you paid for those Biltein shocks and springs, that give you a "tuned suspension" LOL!! Oh, almost forgot the locker you use maybe 2% of your driving time....
Yeah that engine sounds real nice on start up......rattle,rattle,rattle (timing chain noise)yeah it's a much better engine than toyota's ....lol gimme a break!
Lots of snow here in Chicago. I'm really loving the 4wd. This weather has just absolutely nixed the little idea I've been kicking around about trading in my truck this summer for a Lightning. Well, that, the gas prices, and additional years of truck payments. We're gonna get nailed here in Chi-town when they tack all of the gas taxes back on starting on 1/1/01.
I'm looking forward to my impending trip to the North Woods next week where I'll be on a REAL off-road vehicle, my Ski-Doo Formula 500!!!
I know your not talking about the same SOHC 4.0 that will whip your ... Its obvious you haven't test driven one yet. The new SOHC 4.0 is a far superior truck engine to the 3.4. Once again you Toyota boys shy away from HP/Torque curves, man, you guys hate those things. Heck, my old 4.0 with 160HP and 225ft/lbs of torque has a better pulling range than your high tech 3.4..! Want a real truck, get a Ranger... Want a Toy, buy a Toyota.
and quit dreaming 2KTRD. Kick but how, be more specific. Or are you afraid I will pick your resoning apart? I suspect once again you are a Toyota boy who uses his truck as a race truck? I find that more and more that the Tacoma owners are generally yuppies and don't use their trucks as trucks.
Is there something you do not understand about 207hp vs 190hp, about 240lb/ft torque vs 225lb/ft and with the facts that the gearing, with the exception of 1st gear, is in the Rangers favor?
Hmm just wonder what the 4.0 would do with twin OH cams like the Tacoma. . .
I'm confident that my tacoma will still beat the new ranger in a 0-60 run and also the 1/4 mile. Also my tacoma has 4.10 rear axle ratio and 5-speed trans to boot.(remeber a auto trans sucks more power from the engine than a manual)
didn't know that the SOHC 4.0 is available in a 5spd also? Your days of glory are over bud. Rangers on top now. Once again a Toyota fan wanting to treat their truck as a race car. Want to race? Why didn't you buy a Celica? The new SOHC 4.0 will out pull/tow/haul your Tacoma. What a real truck is supposed to do...
My tacoma is not my only vehicle,i have a 600 horse monte in my garage so as you can see i don't really need a celica to race with ok? And as for the tacoma...yes i like to "race" it sometimes when i get the chance and most of the time it holds it's own against many other cars and to me thats fun! Oh and i'm planning on getting the supercharger too!!! ha ha
you meet up with a Ranger SOHC 4.0 5spd with a Paxton supercharger, then your second once again. Why would you want to supercharge a truck? This makes absolutley no sense?
If he meets a Ranger with Paxton supercharger with his supercharged Tacoma and after five years of racing they both blow their engines, the Tacoma will be covered under warranty while the Ranger owner will have to shell out $4,000 or so for a new engine. Ford won't even insure their non-supercharged engine for more than three years.
In respect for Ford, I want to reiterate my respect for Ford as the best domestic small truck available, IMO. Depending on your needs, the Ranger may well be a better choice. As far as a better "value" as Vince is trying to promote, I would disagree. The Ranger has a deeper bed and offers a limited slip diff., for example. The Tacoma on the other hand, has larger more effective brakes and is the standard in quality others try to achieve. The price difference is less than vince and others portray here but it is more expensive which is a major factor for many. The Tacoma is worth the 1-2k difference in price to me but it's a matter of need and taste. Too bad we can't compare the trucks here based on real differences like these rather than the misleading and outright false information people like Vince use over and over.
The lightning is covered for 3 years with up to an 8 year extended warranty available,I read at this site that an aftermarket trd charger is only covered for 3 years or 36000 miles. Why would you put an aftermarket charger on your truck? There's more to it than that your drive shaft has to be able to handle the extra torque and Hp and also the engine has to be able to handle the pressure also.
Well, if you WANT to, you can work with a company called Vanair in Colo. They build up ONLY Ford 4.0L V6's...and can build one somewhere in the area of 250+ hp. HOWEVER, with ANY hp additions to a vehicle, one must consider that the drivetrain was NOT built for the additional hp. That means that the additions MAY cause you problems down the road with other components.
Minor changes that effect the efficiency of a motor, K&N...coolers...etc should not overstress the drivetrain.
Why would you want to supercharge a truck? hmm let me think ahh MORE POWER MAYBE?...I want to do it just for the fun facter!not because i need it or anything.
Invest the 3K in hrct and you may be able to retire at a very early age,and then you can buy what ever you want.hrct may be the equilavent of aol in China in a few years.
Just drove home my 2001 Tacoma SR5 4WD with 16" tires and phew was it a relief. I bargained for a certain payment right off the bat. Didn't let them sell me pricey options but I got them anyway for the price without them because they couldn't locate a 5 speed with the few options i wanted. I recommend you let them know very little which options you want at first. And use the options as bargaining chips right before you close the deal. It worked out well and i only paid 200 over invoice. Plus i got a 100,000 mi/6yr warranty bumper to bumper for only 680 bucks more. I am very pleased with the truck, looks great and sits higher than any other compact pickup. Now can anyone tell me if i should get the rhinolining spray bed liner?
The dealer still took you for a ride on the extended warranty. In 100,000 miles, you're not going to see the inside of the service dept. except for routine maintenance. You have up to 90 days to get a refund on the extended warranty, and I suggest you do it as quickly as possible. They will prorate it for the number of miles you have already put on your truck.
Good choice of trucks, though, and I hope you enjoy the new ride.
Forgot to mention the bedliner. I would get an over-the-rail bedliner, which will protect the top side of your bed should you stack or lay anything across it. This is what I have on mine. Plus, you can take it out (it is fitted by bolts) if you decide to get rid of your vehicle or leave it in. Either way, having a bedliner increases the value of your truck and keeps the bed looking the same color all the time.
By the way, your approach of trying to get a certain payment is not the best way to bargain. You should always haggle, instead, over the price and once you get something around $250-$500 over invoice, you should then shoot for the best possible interest rate. If you just go in and tell them you want a payment somewhere around $350, they'll put you in the truck with no problem, but you may end up with 12-18% interest and payments stretched out over six years.
I'm not trying to kill your enthusiasm, just wanted to let you know. Good luck.
The Ford Lightning comes with a supercharger standard, and this is the reason it is covered for 3 yrs/36K miles, like all other Ford products. Any vehicle with standard items can be had with an extended warranty, so what are you gloating about?
The TRD supercharger is not exactly an "aftermarket charger." TRD stands for "Toyota Racing Development" and is 100% owned and run by Toyota (kind of like SVT is for Ford). Toyota engines are covered for 5 yrs/60K miles, and when you buy the TRD supercharger, that warranty is not voided. Yes, the TRD supercharger itself is only covered for 3 yrs/36K miles, but so is the entire Tacoma truck, and from all the reliability studies, we know how long those things last.
Just like proving you wrong, you said the charger was warrented for 5 yrs,you were wrong just admit it,and I have friends who have Tacoma's,one had head gasket problem just at 40,000 miles, another guy has had problems with wiring and brakes and a few cosmetic problems but both still like there trucks. But again Toyota is not invincible. The reasons you don't hear as much is because there owners are either embarrissed to say, and they don't sell squat for trucks compared to the big 3.What is it like 10 to 1 or something like that.
I agree with the over the bed rail liner UNLESS you are having a bed cover installed. There could be a conflict in sealing if you decide for the bed cover, hard or soft.
Look into Ameriguard (or Amerigard?!?) liners. That is what I have and I am well pleased. Wrinkled texture, good for walking on if iced. ALSO...consider liner material for the rocker panel's to keep from scratching if you are a 4X4. Ameriguard can match the body color quite well.
Appreciate the advice. Now i can't decide on a tonnaeu or over the rail. Hmmm... also, i guess you are right about the warranty, except it sounds soooooo good for the money. Anyway, I didn't let them sell me the truck under 66 months as they had tried to do. I used the loan calculator here at Edmund's for 8.5% apr - 60 months and got the pymt that way. What is the actual kickback from the bank going to the dealer anyway?
The freedom from worry of an extended warranty always sounds good, but this is the whole point of buying a toyota product in the first place--you're not going to need to purchase additional protection. I wouldn't want to have to buy something if I knew I needed to protect it further with additional warranties. Cancel that warranty immediately, and you'll have more than enough to get either bedliner that you want.
As far as kickbacks from the bank, I don't know exactly what you are referring to. Did you finance your vehicle through Toyota or through another lending institution?
I bought my truck from Tom Chevrolet, and one of the nice things they do as a dealership is extend the factory warranty to 5 years if you bring your truck to them for oil changes and scheduled maintenance. There oil change price is $19.95 first one free and all the other maintenance is the same as any other Dealer.I think thats a fairly good deal, most service depts are terrible with all makes but this one seems to be the best I've encountered so far.
I would stay away from the over the rail liner, they tend to wear the paint off the side of the bed from vibrating back and fourth plus the under rail looks alot cleaner.
I would agree, mine is up to the top of the rail but not over. There would be difficulty installing a bed cover. I have the Tec Sport soft cover, easy to install and looks nice on the truck.
What i have heard is that if you don't select a bank to finance your vehicle through, the dealership uses a particular bank for your financing. They advertise say an 8.5% apr (8.9 yield) to the masses (and to you at the toyota dealership) but because of the volume of business a car dealership can possibly send the banks's way, they get some cut or discount rate that you never see, such as 8.25%. And the diff goes into their (toyota's) profits. Does this make sense or am i just becoming an obsessive paranoid? On a more important note, i guess i don't imagine myself hauling much concrete or boards (probably furniture and stuff). i suppose i should just get the spray-on poly-u up to the rail and then a tonnaeu... people say they are not too terribly durable (the poly) but i am a teacher, not a contractor. I bet if i hauled a few students in the back they'd like the poly better too. Just kidding. Ok, i think you have convinced me to drop the warranty. Common sense prevails.
Boy, getting all hot and bothered before the new year are you? What's all this admit that you're wrong garbage? The TRD supercharger carries a full 5 year warranty just like the Tacoma's engine when you have it dealer installed when the truck is new. Otherwise it is warrantied for the remainder of the Tacoma's powertrain warranty or 12 months whichever is longest. Here's the exect quote from the TRD site: "Dealer-installed 3.4L V6 TRD Supercharger systems are warranted by TRD for 12 months or for the remainder of the vehicle’s Toyota Powertrain Warranty when installed by a Toyota dealer". Now are you going to admit that you're wrong like you wanted us to? It really shouldn't bother you this much that Toyta is still rating better in quality than the big three. We never said that Toyota was perfect either, just that Toyota's are on average built to a higher quality standard. Don't blame us, blame the big three.
Yes, you are correct about the financing scheme. But assuming one has average or better than average credit, they should already have their loan processed and be able to walk into the dealership ready to negotiate just the price of the vehicle. But, if you let the dealership shop the banks and lending institutions for you, yeah, they're going to go with someone they do business with all the time and someone who will work with you, of course. How much of a kickback they receive from their "buddy" banks remains to be seen. It's an interesting idea, and I wouldn't say you are paranoid to be considering it. Maybe Dateline should do an investigation to see if it is really widespread, which I believe it is.
Ah spoog, I assume we could someday see your vehicle or offroad club in the famous Four Wheeler magazine...? As I understand it from the founder of RROC, FourWheeler was VERY impressed with the club.
After all, you post that old article so often you must be wearing out that disk section. . .you need some new material. . .
Should have some pics soon, hopefully with the front end of the Ranger in the air about 5-6 inches.
It was fun. A little area just east of Castle Rock, Co. Played around with my sons Toy, a 99 Jeep and a new S-10 showed up.
Gotta hand it to the S-10. Those are some powerful engines they install in them. And they look nice for a while. Just wish the reliability was better on them.
like those superchargers don't ya? But I notice you never post pricing, why is that? Could it be it cost about 3K to have it "dealer installed"? I still don't understand why in the heck you would want to supercharger a truck. Its apparent that most Toyoyta owners use their trucks as race cars. If you wanted fast why didn't you buy a Celica or a...??? Is that Toyota's fastest production car now? A 27K compact truck... Yeah, I'm going to take a 27K truck into the brush and mud and rocks....... LOL!
The Feb 2001 issue page 89. It is a red Ranger and you can tell from the windshield logo.
vince: 4.0 Ranger XLT's were running about $17-18K in the Denver area this past weekend. At least you could get some for that price, not loaded but nicely equipped.
The Toy has a 3/36 just like everyone else. The extra 2 years is POWERTRAIN. While a worthwhile STANDARD feature it is the lowest optional warranty on the big 2 trucks. Maybe a couple hundred $'s.
