Sorry for posting so late, been on vacation this week. At 60 mph the rpm is about 1500 rpm. I will double check and get back to you. (I am not on-line at home so it may be a little while to get back to you. Company shutdown for last week of December) Most of my driving is on local roads so I am not on the highway often. Happy Holidays
Check out some of the Dakota topics in the owners club conference if you have not done so yet. Lots of useful information there and seems to get more responses there also.
I also felt this truck had a lot of value for the money.
I was also considering the Ford Super Crew but there was no manual tranny available and I liked the styling of the Dakota better. I have owned fords in the past and, well, ummm, I just could not justify getting another one. With all the bad press about Ford lately, I could not, in good conscience, support that company at this time.
Re checked, and at 60 mph the tach is at 1750 rpm. 55 mph 1600 rpm This is with the T&H package which has P265/70/16 tires. The truck has 3.55 axle.
In hindsite, I probably should have gotten the 3.92 axle, there does not seem to be much of an rpm penalty. I do not currently tow, but perhaps in the future, might consider getting a small boat. I anticipate that the boat/trailer combo would weigh in at around 3000 lbs. which the current truck configuration can handle. Oh well, live and learn.
I have not run into anyone who has not experienced some level of inferiority with their Dakota -cab as opposed to the Super crew. This is especially so regarding styling. The Super crew is a Truck, the I?-cab yeeeech!!!! Interior: get inside an Expedition(sweet!) or get inside a Dodge Neon with a box attached to the back! Could not do it.
I haven't seen any vehicles that don't have some problems. I own a 01 Dodge Durango with a new 4.7 in it, I had a 5.2 in a previous Durango, I get about 5 mpg better with the 4.7 with the same horse power. I also own a SD F250 CC SB, so loyality to one manufacturer is not really in my book, my loyality is to the vehicle that serves my purpose for my needs at the time. As for bashing a Dakota owner for what he drives, because it's not what you drive, that's childs play. I could enter your game too and ask why spend up to 36 grand and get a Super Crew when you could get a Super Duty. Personnally I find both of those trucks a little on the short side for the sole reason that the bed is shorter then the short bed vs the long bed, at least on a regular short bed you can lay the tail gate down for a 4x8 without hangover. As for inside interior room, if you would compare, there's only a couple of inches or less in differance for passengers. But then again I wanted more interior room and more comfort and bought a Super Duty. It's not saying either a Super Crew or a Dakota Quad Cab is a bad vehicle, but for my purpose neither would do. And therefore just because I do not drive either or wouldn't buy one at this time, does not mean I will bash trucks to get the defensive owner up in arms. Who knows somewhere down the line my needs may change and I'll consider one or the other.
At #106 I gave you my opoinion. Last week I finally took delivery on my 2500 HD GMC crew cab short bed with 8.1, Allison and 3.73 locker. It is comfortable, solid and quiet. The leather steering whel wrapping makes more noise than anything as it slides through my hands coming out of a sharp turn from a driveway or some such. Its everything I hoped. To each his own.
It finally hit me! I am just another GOLDIELOCKS! Everything we looked at was either too big, or too little or too this or that...well low and behold we stumbled upon our "little" beauty: 2001 GMC 1500 HD Crew! That's right 1500 HD with a GREAT 6.0 ltr. This truck it the C3 on roids! Got all the good from the 2500 HD and the best from the 1500. For us this truck was JUST RIGHT!
OK... I'd really appreciate if you get off of the topic of each other and get back onto Shortbed Crew Cabs. It doesn't matter how clever you think your "digs" are about another user, they're not approriate and will not be tolerated. Move on. This is supposed to be FUN, not a contest to see who can prove anyone wrong.

from ya. since you are the one guy that obviously knows the most about the new HD CC from chevy, i'll need some input from you when i get ready to order. right now i'm not sure if i should go with a 6.0 or the duramax. any thoughts from ya would be greatly appreciated, as i know you've driven a few and had the chance to check em out. thanks in advance tim.
I don't know about that.....driven a couple 6.0's...and a few 8.1's....all automatics....both 3:73 and 4:10 in both engine...6.0 ya have to get a 4:10...as I would anyway....8.1...probably don't need a 4:10....but I like the way it drives with it....and would suggest it...Duramax...3:73 is the max....and a 6.0 don't compare to a Duramax....now an 8.1 sure does....I'd take the 8.1...unless I was going to the high end of the towing scale....then a duramax.
Fact I'd only get the Duramax if I had a serious towing job for it....some like a diesel for dry commuting and figure it will pay for itself in a few years with the saved gas.....but meantime ya gotta listen to the Pig!....all claim their's are quieter now...and they are to a certain degree...but not quiet enough for me..
The new HD's...crew cab and ex.cab both drive better than my 8600 GVW...(they are 9200)....and the 8600 drives better than my old 1/2..(6800?)....hell...my 10,700 Cube van drives better than them all!...more GVW seems to be a better ride for me I guess?...granted the HD's had brand new shocks..bushings..springs..etc...which I'm sure played a role....but still a nicer ride.
CC is very nice as well...providing you can deal with the extra 11.5"....sometimes an Ex.cab can be tight....oh well....life goes on eh?
I say "know the most" because when I see questions about the chevy trucks, I usually see you or a couple of other guys giving much needed info and help.
now the 8.1 is something I never gave much thought to, but now that you mention it, I'm gonna check it out. I too don't really care for the noise of a diesel, but sure love the way you can feel the torque. length won't bother me as I already drive a LB version of the ext. cab. you've given me some great input so far so now i can at least focus on some areas i hadn't given much thought to. i'm a buy it then figure it out kinda guy, but as i said, with the help you and a few others have given to me and other members here at edmunds, i've learned a whole new way of looking at buying a new truck.

Glad to be of service...CC is 11.5" longer than an ext. cab......so yes...an ex.cab LB is even longer.......now a CC LB is a tank!
LOL
