2002 Jetta wagon - how to open tailgate without battery?

Have a project 2002 Jetta Wagon. Can't get the tailgate open. For now, battery is not an option.
Try the key in the VW logo and it doesn't do anything.
Can't find any alternate method. Maybe it is simple and I am missing it.
Appreciate any help.
