Hi Folks --

I am looking at a 03 Tracker with the 2.0 engine, manual tranny, and 4WD. It has 95k miles on it. Any advice on purchasing the vehicle or the vehicle itself? Is the timing chain durable enough to last another 50-100k miles, or is it something I should plan on replacing sooner? Thanks!

There is no way to know just what the health of the timing chains are. There are two chains, the primary one goes from the crankshaft to an idler gear and the secondary goes from the idler gear to the camshafts.

With a car approaching twenty years old the best choice is to have a shop look this over pre-purchase. If the owner has and will share the maintenance records that would be a plus. All in all, they weren't the worst cars on the road from that era so it's really going to come down to it's current condition.
