Toyota Yaris 140K miles review

There are several of these hatchback cars in service here. They run very much trouble free. The years that see me are from 07 to 2010. Come around 140K you had better start paying attention to the cooling system. One unit, 09 had a radiator cooling fan failure, then later a overflow tank failed. That vehicle was in open interstate use at the time. Another, an 08 had a radiator fail at 145K. The owner of the first one has bad struts on it and still has not done anything about them. hmm. The 08 has had struts and shocks replaced and is sitting pretty. That 08 has also been repainted. Roof paint, gray, had failed. Car still has plenty of use left in it. I consider auto trans fluid flush, filter and changes part of normal maintenance. If not done, you better get it done yesterday! Same goes for manual transmissions, change the fluid!
So other than basic maintenance, these cars are very low maintenance. If they are wrecked, they can be a headache for those not experienced in auto repair. A couple have been a pain in mine! Since I tend to buy them totaled.
So bottom line. At 140K, my maintenance schedule here now has a complete rebuild of the cooling system. Water pump, thermostat, radiator and tank, cooling fan, radiator hoses, heater hoses and throttle body hoses. Use quality parts if you want another 140K miles out of it. Cooling system failures are the #1 reason for a engine loss I have had! Yes, the car if well cared for to this point is worth. it. Many of them out there with more than 400K on the clock! When I look back at older designs, Tercel, Echo, this service tended to come around 120K miles. That's an improvement. Wonder when the fuel pumps start to fail. AAA, come get it.
Hope those of you reading are running Marvel Mystery oil. That stuff keeps things well lubricated with this dry stuff they call gasohol. It lubricates the following, fuel pump, fuel injectors, intake valves and upper cylinders in the piston chambers. It has become my hail Mary pass in many cases where the other option was a major tear down. When I have a fuel pump fail, with Marvel it is because the motor burned out from age! Just don't see them going from a failed pump itself.
On another note, while buying at auction, I have noted these cars tend to get bought to run the wheels off them. Seems to me, a very good rep for Toyota to have. If you get your hands on one that is well maintained. Count yourself lucky. they are becoming hens teeth.
