Symptom: When trying to restart starting motor continues to run when key is released, until key completely turned off.

    Sounds like a short in the starter.

    It's a common strategy today that the engine control module has total control of starting the engine. The start command only needs to be momentarily and the system keeps cranking for a period of time or until the engine starts which ever happens first. When there is a problem where the engine doesn't start having the starter crank for fifteen to twenty seconds (depending on temperature inputs) would be normal behavior for the system.
