But I agree with your point. Hopefully, the $3 gas prices lasted long enough for most to learn this time that happy days will NEVER be here again.
We can only hope. Actually, I can see something else happening though. Back in the late 50's there was a backlash against big cars, although it wasn't due to gas prices so much as a bad economy. However, once the dust settled, it wasn't too long before we had Chevies and Fords and Plymouths the same size as what Caddies and Lincolns used to be!
There was another backlash in the 70's and early 80's, thanks to two fuel scares and a recession. But once the dust settled, it wasn't long before we had the masses driving around in trucks and SUVs that outweighed any car put out in even the most excessive, opulent times of the 70's.
If and when the dust settles this time around, I shudder to think what the next "Big" vehicle will be? International CXT-type vehicles? :surprise:
Costco has unleaded for $2.58 this evening. I drove by the only station in CA that sells E85. Price $3.30 per gallon. They also sell B20 biodiesel. It was $2.99 per gallon. Most of the stations in my area range from $2.56 to $3.15 for unleaded 87. Diesel and Premium are about the same price.
is about how auditors from the Department of the Interior were ordered by their higher-ups to throw out reports that showed fradulent underpayment of gas and oil royalties owed to the US government.
Nah, the oil companies don't have any reason to want to see the status quo maintained in Washington.
>their higher-ups to throw out reports that showed fradulent underpayment of gas and oil royalties
You're going to get the anti-conspiracy theorists calling you a conspiracy theorist just like me if you keep talking like that. Grin...
Here most prices would rise on Thursday as a group of 90% or more of stations with 12 hours of each other and when I pointed that out I was called a conspiracy theory person.
Click on the box to show the 3 month trend in historical price chart. Also click on the box to show the crude oil prices in that same period of time.
For the Dayton area, it looks as though the average retail price dropped from $2.96/gal (8/3) to $2.09/gal (9/17); a drop of about 30% in the price of gas. Over that same period of time, the price of oil went from $76.72/bbl (8/6) to around $63/bbl (9/17); a drop of about 18% in the price of oil.
At least in the Dayton area, the local price of gas has fallen at nearly twice the rate that crude oil prices have fallen.
I'll not comment on whether this data further supports or disproves anyone's theories.
...guarantee of victory against Chicago tomorrow...
So what happened? :P (You know I wasn't going to let you get away with that Rock)
Petrol prices here have been running about $2.63 on average for 87 in the west / north western suburbs. The prices were falling like a rock for about 3 weeks then stalled at the $2.65 range, they're just hitting the $2.58 mark at a couple of stations by me (Jewel, Citgo). Shells, BPs, Mobils and Speedways are running $2.65. Not sure what the price is in the city, usually $0.15 - $0.30 higher than out here.
If fuel prices keep dropping I may be able to afford to buy lunch one day at BK, or use the lights in my home. :surprise:
We're heading for below $2.00 at most stations in the area.
$2.03, $2.01, $2.05 seen this morning as I drove errands. And it's Friday. That means they will do a random walk down until the companies decide they have to do a "restoration" of price.
and it looks like low-test is down to about $2.12 in southern MD. Last I checked, the Citgo near me was still $2.459 (didn't notice it this morning though) and the Shell was $2.529.
Last nite I was up near BWI airport again, and saw 87 for $2.399.
I also had to fire up the furnace last night, and the night before, so I know I'll be thinking about home heating oil prices again soon!
Yes, to let Joe go was kind of a bad move. But believe me, I'm still keeping my fingers crossed on Chi-town Bears.
Anyway, petrol at the local Shell and BP by work are "down" to $2.589. Usually they are a couple cents higher than the Citgo a mile up the road. Can't complain since fuel has dropped $.50 over the past month. Here's hoping it continues AND those that are conserving continue to do so.
I filled up my Intrepid at the local Citgo, which is holding at $2.359 for 87 octane. I took my Grandma up to Pennsylvania for her high school reunion, and thought I'd get gas up there, as it's usually cheaper. It wasn't that much less though. Cheapest I saw was $2.299 around Mechanicsburg.
Anyway, it took $31.85 to fill it up. Roughly 13.5 gallons. Not bad for ~375 miles. I figure it got almost 28 mpg on that tank, and this trip only accounted for about 240 miles of that tank, as it already had about 135 miles on this tank.
It's nice to be able to fill up for around $30 again. That $40+ crap was getting annoying.
I know this is on the odd side.... but, I've been trying to catch up on my reading in the "inconsiderate drivers" thread (400+ posts)... and, you referred to a young women as driving erratically as being "Clara Peller"... I know that is from a sitcom but which one?
Visiting the town of Newport Beach, CA... I paid $2.97 for premium at the 76 station. That is a great price for California as I've paid as much as $3.65 a gallon a few months ago. Hope the trend continues as my Land Rover is averaging about 13.9 mpg's!
Thanks.. Mark156

One station in Oceanside is selling regular for $2.49 per gallon. Costco at $2.53 for 87 with premium at $2.73. Where is the post where I predicted $2.50 before November? Have the doom n gloomers gone off to another thread?
I really don't remember. I just made a statement that I thought gas would be below $2.50 before the election. I also said oil will come back down to $40 per barrel. That has a ways to go. I think there are places selling gas for $1.89 in the midwest. That tells me they are trying to squash the ethanol business before it gets going. Which throws a monkey wrench into the conspiracy theories on Bush and big oil. He has pushed ethanol. Or is it just politics as usual?
she was the "Where's the Beef" lady in the old Wendy's commercials back in the 80's. I forget what context I mentioned her in, but I remember her in the movie "Moving Violation". Toward the beginning of the movie, there was a scene were one little old lady picked up another at the airport, in a '68 or so Chevy Impala. I forget which one Clara was, but now I'm thinking she was the passenger and not the driver.
Anyway, the driver could barely see, and ended up somehow driving out onto the runway, getting up behind a jumbo jet, and started honking her horn and griping about "these damn buses!"
Now that I think about it, I believe one of those Wendy's commercials had Clara Peller driving around erratically in an old Volvo 144?
Wendy's commercials had Clara Peller driving around erratically in an old Volvo 144?
That one I can't recall. Maybe it was before my time. Can you tell us more about that particular commercial? That wasn't the one where Volvo bragged how strong they were and ergo how safe buthad reinforced the roof pillars on the Volvo so it would hold a pre92 Oldsmobile 88?
Gas prices at more stores are below $2.00. The several stores in the greater city area who had maintained $2.249 have started dropping. There's only one at $2.249 today reported. That signals to me that 'they' will raise prices this week, probably earlier than the typical Thursday morning price rise schedule, in order to do a price "restoration."
OPEC would like to control the price as is. Our largest imports of oil are from non OPEC countries, Canada and Mexico. When more of the old Soviet bloc countries start selling oil it will have an impact. Time will tell. In the 1980s people said we would never see oil under $30 per barrel. It hit a low of $9 a barrel in 1998. What impact would oil finds off the coast of Florida do for the price? This current price drop is pretty coincidental with the Chevron find in the Gulf of Mexico. Claims are, that find will double our current known reserves.
it now looks like there are some places in southern Maryland that are down to $2.07 per gallon. And there are stations within 10 miles of where I live where it's down under $2.30. I dunno if the two stations on my way to work will ever get below $2.00 per gallon, but this has still been a nice little reprieve.
$2.00/gal for 87 no-lead, though. If yours drops somebody else's will rise. The thing to watch is the U.S.average, though, my high-flyin' car-loving friends. It must stay above $2.00/gal for 87 no-lead.
We're seeing the slightest decrease, but not like some of you guys. Must be more demand or less supply in my market...yeah. I still don't know why we had about a week where the premium differential was only 6 cents.
I said 2 bucks? I do remember the $40 oil. I don't think SD will make it by this weekend. I do think it proves "what goes up can come down". It is a crap shoot at best.
They figure that by the time they've bled the siezed Iraqi oilfields dry, this new find in the Gulf will be online in time to keep the military/industrial machine happy.
Check gasbuddy...the state average is 2.75 (they report a 4 cent rise in the past 24 hours!) with the national average of 2.38. So it might be high compared to the national average, but not to the state. Funny how we were almost at the average, but we are significantly higher yet again. Those market forces at work!
According to gasbuddy the cheapest gas in this place is 2.72...but I don't buy the cheapest.
Everett is in another county which likely has different taxation, and it's a more right wing area to boot...so who knows how that could influence...
I also noted the Seattle average is at $2.650 (which is down slightly from $2.658 yesterday). So that's not too far off the state average.
"Everett is in another county which likely has different taxation, and it's a more right wing area to boot...so who knows how that could influence..."
I didn't know it was a different county; I figured it was 'only' 20 miles away so it was in the same taxing jurisdiction (unless, of course, Bellevue has their own city taxes applied to the retail gas prices.). I know that the Austin area is generally spread out over 3 counties here in Tejas (Williamson, Travis, and Hays counties) and for some reason, gas prices locally are lowest in the 'right wing' areas here as well.
Regarding the whole 'right wing area': I've noted that, generally speaking, MANY items (housing in particular) is less expensive in the 'right wing' areas. Perhaps those same 'market forces' affecting gas prices also apply to housing?
One of the things to remember is that there are many different gasolines (formulae) being used in this country. Therefore when you look at averages, and compare yourself to them, you have to ask what is different about your situation.
Does your state require gasoline with additive A&B? Are there only a few refineries making this blend? Is one of those refineries partially down for maintenance, thus causing some local shortages? is that shortage being made up by shipping gasoline an extra 2,000 miles - that would add cost?
Every year here in NH, between winter and summer seasons and some counties requiring certain blends, the different areas trade places whether they are in cost. If you have strict environmental rules - CA for example - you're probably going to limit your supply choices and have higher costs.
Similarly I believe New England has high natural gas costs as we're at the end of the pipeline, and it costs more to get it here.
Least expensive 87 I saw yesterday in Nashua was $2.25.
