Steering wheel jerks very hard after a stop

been having a problem for a while now, somewhat intermittent. after coming to a complete full stop, car shuts off. (cant remember what its called, think its auto-stop?) but after the car engine starts again the steering wheel will jerk the opposite direction that it is turned. i.e if im trying to turn right itll jerk my arm off to the left. only happens at stop signs. any idea what could be causing this?

Typically one of the things that could cause an engine restart or not permit it to stop in the first place is steering wheel angle. Are you turning the wheel as the engine stops, or while it is already stopped? While the vehicle has a system to retain vehicle power for accessories like the instrument cluster, lights, and radio something like the power steering would draw too much power for it to do its job, so the strategy is to have the engine running and the alternator charging if steering is required. If the electronic power steering is cycling off and then back on during the restart that might be what you are feeling occur and it might just be the side loading of the tires being noticeable since you are momentarily losing assist.
