I had a similar problem with a 2004 Chevy. It would start and shift into reverse only to stall when put into drive. The problem was a sensor on the transmission that told the TCM which gear the transmission was in. According to the shop, if these sensors get dirty communication is lost and the TCM can’t select a gear. Cheap fix of about $100.

I assume a 2007 Toyota has an electronic controlled transmission.

Does the engine stalling just kind of die like the engine isn't idling fast enough, or does it slam and stall like you slipped your foot off of the clutch in a manual transmission?
