Took our 2008 Grand Caravan into Thompson Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Baltimore, MD yesterday for the whistling, after driving from the beach on Saturday listening to it for 3 hours. Service manager say they have the van "apart" and taped and they still don't know what the problem is but they do hear it. Mine whistles at 65 and really sings a tune at 75. Service manager called us this morning and said that they are on the internet looking into the problem. Said they ours is the first one to come in with this problem (Do I get a prize for being #1?). Will send an update when I get one.
If anyone's dealership doesn't have a clue about the 2008 Caravan/Town Country whistling windshield phenomenom, the service dept. at "Dodge Country" in Killeen, Texas (ask for Chris or Kent) say they have it figured out. Maybe your dealership can talk to them. I will let you know if they are successful in correcting the problem. I'm thinking about that Lemon Law... I emailed Dodge and got a stock response from some sort of email call center. I don't understand why there is not better communication about this problem between dealerships and the manufacturer.
I called my Dodge dealer in Cherry Hill, NJ this morning about the whistling noise. They told me Dodge has released an alert to all the dealers about this issue. The noise is caused by the roof rack. The holes that are located to the right and left side of the adjuster knobs on the slider bars are working like a whistle. To limit the noise they instructed me to slide the roof rack bars all the way to the back of the van or remove the bars all together. Dodge is fully aware of this issue they said. I am going to give this a try and see if they are right. What's weird about this is the noise sounds like its coming from under or around the dash board or windshield. I will give this a try and report back to let you know if this is indeed the root cause of this annoying sound.
Our whistle was definitely from the windshield- we don't have a roof rack! Either Dodge has created several sources of whistling or they are completely clueless. I don't know which is worse. Try the duct tape around the windshield/molding- if it stops whistling you've found the source.
Dealer (Ron the service writer) called this afternoon and said that he had my whistling problem fixed. Said he even took it for a ride himself and did not hear it. Turned in rental and went to picked up our van. Cause according to them: Heres a new one folks.....Reinstalled right outter door mirror trim. I didnt feel too good about that explaination. So off to the beltway we went. Got her up to 65 and surprise......the whistle is back and at 80 whistle all the time. Called the dealership right away and left a message with Ron the service writer. Went and had dinner and since we were right by the dealership Thompson Chrysler Dodge Jeep, we took her back and I left them a very "nice" note with my key in the night drop box. Let them know that there is a dealership in TX with possible solution and I can get them the name if they call me. Made note that this was repair #2 of 4 for lemon law reason. Tomorrow is another day. Will post more when I know more.
WE DO HAVE THE WIND NOISE FIXED,SO ANY ONE CAN CALL. I HAVE TALKED TO CHRYSLER ABOUT IT, ANY DEALER CAN CALL STAR FOR HELP. MY NAME IS KENT @ DODGE COUNTRY IN KILLEEN TEXAS.
The problem has nothing to do with "Roof Racks" as many of us with the problem don't have roof racks.
Joe, the service manager at Dependable Dodge in Vero Beach, Florida, thinks he has found the cause of the whistle and corrected it. This is the 5th time that I have had to bring my vehicle to Dodge for this problem but I'm hopeful that they have corrected it. Joe spoke with Kent at Dodge Country in Texas (listed above) and they believe that they are on the same page with this problem so have your service manager call one of them. Good Luck.

Can you tell us what the problem was? I know several minivan owners and one of them says he is having the whistling problem. I'd like to pass on any diagnostic info that you may have discovered. Thanks.
Ok, alot of people using this forum are from all over North America. Can you please list out what the problem with the van was? If you do not know please call your dealership or look on the service invoice and pass the information along. I am sure Joe and Kent are great guys but they cant service everyone!!
Just wondering what your service guy/Kent from Tx thinks it is? Can you post please?. My service manager Ron (Thompson Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Baltimore, MD) now seems to think it is the windshield or the seal. Says that he had his glass guy in and they took van for a ride and when they pressed on the right side of the windshield the whistle changed pitches. Says when he went to order new windshield from Chrysler it shows as being on "National Backorder" which to him shows there is a problem. Said he is going to order as a car down order to expidite the order quicker, unless his glass guy can get a new one. And the journey continues...... Thanks for the post everyone.
I took the van in on Tuesday morning- haven't yet gotten it back to see if it is fixed. I'm hoping to get it back Friday in time for a day trip that will give it a good test run. As far as I understand, it is the molding around the windshield- but I don't know what the repair entails. Do they reseat the windshield, replace it, or just reseal the molding? Hopefully I'll know more when the car is done. If it is truly fixed and the whistle never returns, Kent from Dodge Country will be the hero to thousands of van owners! I will definitely let everyone know how it goes.
I put a small bead of clear silicon between the windshield rubber moldings and the body of the van on both the right and left sides. Drove to New Orleans and back (300 miles) with no whistle yesterday. I am totally convinced this has solved the problem since the painters tape that I used before the silicon also stopped the whistle.
I got my Caravan back today after the 5th time in service for this whistling problem....The service manager has assured me that the problem has been "corrected". I will be taking a 6 hour trip on I-95 tomorrow in the hot Florida sun so we will see if the problem has been or hasn't been corrected then....It is worth mentioning that I just spent the last hour cleaning off black silicone from all over the vehicle and that the actual "repair" looks terrible as what they did was silicone everything including the right and left side of the windshield between the windshields rubber molding and the metal vehicle body...I assure you that when I purchased the vehicle a month ago, I would never have bought it if it was siliconed as it is today...If anyone has a "cleaner" repair, please let me know what they did. Thanks.
You have got to be joking!! Brand new vehicles and customers and service departments are using SILICON on the exterior of a vehicle for repairs!!!!!! That is OUTRAGEOUS!!! I would be demanding a proper fix or my money back!! I am glad I have not experienced this problem yet. I am not sure what is worse silicon or duct tape!!! UNREAL! :lemon:
They made a huge mess with the silicone on service appointment #5. I don't know whether or not they have fixed the whistle but they did manage to crack my windshield....I guess that Service appointment #6 will be first thing in the morning.
I don't know if this is the same location that Kent found, but we seem to have located where the noise is coming from. on our van, it is coming from the passenger side rearview mirror. We noticed that we were able to eliminate the whistle when we turned the mirror inward while driving. until we are able to get the van into the service shop, we have placed black electrical tape over the cracks in the mirror that allow it to be folded and have not noticed the whistle at all. And it has been hotter than heck the last week here in Georgia
despite the fact that the dealership cracked my windshield and made a huge mess with the silicone, they were sucessful in finally pinpointing and neutralizing that horrible whistle. I drove from Vero Beach, Florida to St., Augustine, Florida and back yeaterday and didn't hear a peep, it was the most pleasant ride that I've had in that thing even with the broken windshield. That was a 6 hour ride in the hot Florida sun so I'm certain that the problem is finally fixed. In my case, they sealed the long gap along both sides of the windshield. Apparently their is a nationwide defect that is causing this problem for many of us...The good news is that the dealer has ordered me a new windshield and the service manager has promised to remove all of the unsighytly black silicone.
Good news from Texas- Kent at Dodge Country did a FINE job! The heavy duty black silicone was very nicely done- thick bead along the windshield molding and the body of the car (filled the crevice). I don't know precisely what they did or HOW they did it- perhaps Kent can publish a step-by-step, illustrated procedure manual to share with other service departments (or Dodge could change the design before delivery to the dealerships!). During my 7-hour drive (temps up to 100; not saying I drove 85 mph, but if I did I would say I did not hear a peep; no heavy winds, breeze about 10-15) all I heard was the glorious roar of the road and whoosh of the wind- no whistle of horror. Can't tell you what a relief it was!! I will be taking another trip Monday, east/west instead of south/north- hopefully we'll get stronger winds for another good test run. It would be great if all Dodge service depts. rec'd a notice about this and how to properly correct it. I will report back after trip number 2.
It's nice to see that someone was able to do the repair themselves! We made a mess of our failed attempt with the silicone (I suggest letting it "set" instead of driving in the wind and heat immediately after application! We were in a desperate situation...wish we had tried your order of events, tape before silicon.) I like the heavy-duty black silicon the service dept. used and hope it will last for a good 5 years.
I dont know how you guys can sit back and write posts about being happy that black silicon is a solution. Maybe when you pick up your $30,000 van they should include a caulking gun and a tube a silicon, "oh and sir, if a whistling noise occurs while driving on the highway, just pull over and put a new bead of silicon around your windshield, you may need to re apply every 5 years or so." :surprise: Maybe my expectations for what my hard earned money gets me are a little high? :confuse:
I dont know how you guys can sit back and write posts about being happy that black silicon is a solution.
I guess I'm one of the ones who doesn't see black silicon as being a problem. Don't they use some sort of silicon adhesive when they install the windshield at the factory?
Maybe they need to increase the flow rate of the robot that dispenses it onto the windshield before setting it in place.
First, let me say that I haven't had any wind noise problems with my van. Black silicon would not bother me if applied correctly and smoothly in the gap. If it wasn't done correctly, I would make them do it again and again until it was right. Chrysler takes customer satisfaction surveys pretty seriously. That said, I was fully prepared to deal with some issues when I decided to buy a first year, ground up new vehicle rather than wait for year two or three when the "bugs" are worked out. Every totally new design has initial adjustments, changes, design flaws that are discovered and corrected. Some of them take time and trial and error to work out. So far, the local dealer here has been outstanding with every problem I have heard of. We had two things "fixed" on our van during the first two months. 1. The power side doors were reprogrammed to be less sensitive when closing. 2. The MyGig was updated to the most current version. Overall, my opinion of the total quality of the van vs the competition is very high. Incidentally, the last "first year" vehicle I bought was also a gem for the 130,000 miles I drove it. It was a 1993 Eagle Vision. It was one of the first 1000 made in 1992. It is still on the road with 200,000+ miles on it.
I'm a little late on the draw here, but my wife and I have the same annoying whistling noise in our '08 T&C. They resealed the windshield today and that did not work. It whistles above 60mph and we're taking it on a cross country trip to Oklahoma from California (it's almost as annoying as the broken car horn in the movie "little miss sunshine"). I'll stay posted and post if I can figure it out.
About 880 miles, and the Throttle control light and esp light came on. When this happened the esp went crazy, brakes grabbing, engine stuttering, etc.
I shut it down a few times, and it resets each time, but does it again.
I determined mine does it, when I juice the throttle, or suddenly tax the engine,, turning on a/c at full, cruise control....
I found a dealer while on vacation, of course there were no codes stored for the event, even though it happened like 9 times. finally the next day it happened as i drove by the dealer.
I pulled in and grabbed the mechanic,,, he thinks it's the pcv valve,, will be replacing it tomorrow. Because when he squeezes the pcv tube, the rough idling engine smooths out.
I'll update if that fixes it... oh yeah the check engine light comes on too.
Today I too had the ETC, ESP Bas light come on and then the A/C in the front went out while the rear air still worked so the kids were ok for a while. then the Van lost power and shut down , I threw it in neutral and started it again only to happen a couple of more times. I was able to drop the wife and kids off at the grandparent's and started on my way to the dealership The Van lost all power about 12 times in the 40 mile trip. Some of the lights that came on were the ABS, ESP BAS, Brake, the Electronic Throttle control, Voltage light and the Airbag light. not to mention the transmission was jumping all over the place. Dropped it Off at the dealership but no one will be there till Monday. Please let me know what happens with yours, I would truly appreciate it Thanks So Much, Matt W
The PCV was replaced and,I have not the issue since. And I have tried to create it.
Mechanic says with all this computer crap,,, a large vacuum loss such as the pcv not working, would be considered a major event and would tell the car to shut down or go into limp mode.
I'm still curious why the pcv plugged at 880 miles though?
I just purchased a G.C. and the noise occurred TWO (2) days later. My children were so excited with the swivel seats and DVDs. We loaded up to go to the beach and a strange high pitched noise came out of the passenger side front window. But, the funny thing was that it only makes the noise when you drive into the crosswinds. We drove it straight to the dealer and made him ride in it with us. Luckily, he, too heard the noise. He said it was only our vehicle. But, I asked and drove another vehicle in their lot and it made the same noise.
That was late Sat. night. Was told to bring it back on Monday for service. We brought it in Mon. a.m. (4 days after purchase). He said he will fix it. Apparently, there is now a service bulletin out about the problem.
Hope this fixes the problem. Not a good omen for a car that is only two days old.I am researching the lemon law. Has this problem been finally fixed for others? Anything I should be aware of when I get my 4 day old car back? Thanks.
Well I got the van back this afternoon, the dealership said it was just a module in the steering column that was causing all of the problems. so I took it back to work, and it seemed to be working okay. So then I went to go home the A/C was dead again, so back to the dealership I went and after three more hours they said it was a ?Tip Module? and that they had to special order it and they weren't sure when it would be in. I asked if they couldn't just pull one out one of the vans on the lot of course they said no. I'm too much of a pushover, so its a good thing I have a red headed wife, She was pissed and 20 min later the mechanic called me back saying his GM said to do whatever needs to be done including taking the parts off another van..... I hope this works out tomorrow. I'm going to mention the PCV and see what they say...thanks
Got the call on Friday that the new windshield and moldings were in and to drop off van. Left on Sunday night and called late on Monday being told that they just finished putting new in and that they were waiting to test drive. Said that the right hand molding did come out very easily. Told them to keep until tuesday and let adhesive dry. My wife picked up the van tuesday and had them take it right back to clean up, it was filthy with grease and dirt. Best of all the girl said to my wife, "That will be $120." She laughed at her and told her she better find something else to do with that bill. They then told her it was a mistake. Service guy said that they had it up to 80-85 on the beltway and there was no whistling. Got it home and then noticed that they had chipped the paint in two small places. Back over to the dealership to show them. Said they would fix it. On the way back home we took the van on the beltway and I got it up to 80 and there was no whistling. I hope this is a good sign, but I am not holding my breathe. Somehow I will never trust that the whistling wont come back. We leave for Myrtle Beach in a few weeks so that long drive from MD to SC on 95 will give it a good test.
I hope you never hear that whistle again. Keep us posted. I have not taken mine in again yet. I did send an email to Chrysler this morning asking if they have issued any service directives regarding this common problem. Said I would like to know if service departments are aware of and ready to fix it. Will let you know what I hear back.
Can you give me the email address you used? Maybe if we all send in the complaint something will get done. I have not seen any service advisories posted on the "whistling" issue, although there are a few for some other problems. Thanks
I went into Chrysler.com then clicked on the "owner" tab and utilized the "contact us" by email icon. I have received the standard "We received your email and will get back to you...." reply, but no actual reply yet. You are correct -- maybe if all suffering with whistling vans emails Chrysler we'll get somewhere!! I would like to wait and take my van in only once more and know that the problem will be corrected...
Kent from Dodge Country (Killeen, Texas) did a fine job. We completed our second trip, 6 hour drive west, 4 hour drive east, 2 hour drive north, in temps. over 95 degrees and a variety of wind conditions. I am very happy to report that the whistle has not returned. I hope this is a long-term fix, but I'm so relieved that I don't really care! I will be driving to Colorado in August- if the whistle returns I will post. But I am certainly not expecting to hear it again. I hope everyone gets their whistle taken care of. It CAN be fixed and no one should have to suffer that way. Who ever heard of a new car causing such a dreadful driving experience?!?!!
Well, I got a reply from an actual person. They have no indication of this problem so said to take the van in to one of their service departments to have it taken care of! I wrote back, told them I had already had the van in more than once but that when the service people are unable to duplicate the problem they can't fix it. So I gave them step-by-step instructions on how to go in to Edmunds.com and look at these discussions and I BEGGED them to do so. Told them about Kent at Dodge Country in Killeen, TX and that he supposedly had found and fixed the problem and that now the many of us with BRAND NEW vans with this problem need Chrysler to get the word out to all of their service people so that we can get this taken care of! So, everyone, go in to Chrysler.com, click on "owners" and do the whole contact us thing. We can get them to get the solution out there so that we can take our vans in ONE MORE TIME and get this whistle taken care of. Go team!
We took the car in on Monday and they had it finished by 3:00. They also fixed the recall issue with the luggage rack. We took the car for a test drive down Md. Route 113 where we first heard the noise and we didn't hear a thing. I'm not sure the winds were the same as the day we first heard the noise. We then drove home (about 125 miles) and ran into a big thunderstorm with lots of wind and we still didn't hear anything. So, we're keeping our fingers crossed. The dealer showed us the service bulletin from Chrysler which showed how to fix the problem. We'll be going down to the dealer again next week to have a part on the inside passenger side replaced because the trim was warped. We could see the silicon along the side of the windshield but it wasn't noticeable to the naked eye. You had to look for it. Have they fixed your whistle?
I tried the email thing several weeks ago concerning the whistle. The email I rec'd from an actual person sounded very familiar to the actual person we spoke to when our Dell computer quit working. Very polite but not really saying anything of substance. The call centers in India are like that. I think this email thing is more like a black hole rather than a true effort from Dodge/Chrysler's to communicate with customers. But I could be mistaken. Maybe my email responder just happens to be very polite and had nothing of substance to share with me.
No I have not taken the van back in again. I was waiting to see that there was a true service bulletin that all the service departments would have so that the whistle could really be fixed with one last appointment. Guess I need to check with my local service dept. and see if they have the bulletin on this and are ready to fix it... Was not aware of any luggage rack issues. What's up with that?
You may be right. I hadn't thought about the whole "call center" thing... I did reply using a link provided that contained all the original communication so I'll let everyone know when I hear back again. Should be able to tell then if it is the standard "we really care about your satisfaction", please visit your dealer's service dept. talk. I am going to actually reply again and specify that I was not inquiring about a true recall, simply a service bulletin. I'll let you all know when I get a response.
I am curious if all the noise issues are purely vans purchased and manufactured in the US. Is anyone in Canada experiencing these problems from the Windsor ONT plant? Sometimes Chrysler Canada, and Chrysler US are not always up to date with each other with service bulletins etc... It may also be a good idea to check out the chrysler.ca website and send in e-mails...It cant hurt to try.
I have a Fenton Mo. Grand Caravan, manufactured in Nov 07, and haven't had any problems with it, 7900 miles. By the way, the ratio at the dealers around here appear to be about three to one from the Windsor plant for Grand Caravan. Almost every Town and Country is Windsor.
Here's some clarifying Information on the NAV Guidance Prompting (that I sometimes find annoying). This is from the mofv.com/mygig/ website:
Q: How do I adjust the Nav prompt volume? A: If you want the Nav Prompt volume silenced press NAV then MENU then NAV SETTINGS then GUIDANCE PROMPTS Adjust the Nav Prompt volume to "0" then SAVE. This will silence the Navigation prompt (lady's voice telling you when to turn) until you either adjust it in this menu to some other value or press the RPT key on the top right part of the NAV MAP. The RPT (repeat) button will restore the operation to some minimal value (level 12).
I purchased my TC about 1 month ago. It's nice, however I'd like to see the MPG come a heck of a lot closer to what the manf. claims. (16 - 19 City, 19 - 23 Hwy)
This new 3.8L engine with ~1400 miles on it hasn't done much better that 15.x MPG for city or a mix of city/hwy driving. If I keep the van sniffing the rump end of a semi truck (~6 ft from the back end) on the hwy I can break into the 20s, but that's about it.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Contemplating driving it more vs. taking it back to the dealer (~1 hr drive). Other vehicle owners have claimed a marked increase in MPG after several thousands miles of driving.... hence my dilemna.
I have a 2008 GC SXT w/same engine. On the highway, driving at 60-65 I am getting 25+mpg. (of course everyone passes me, but at todays prices, that could be $5-$6 tanks, I fill up 3x/wk). Combined highway and back roads I get 22mpg. I use cruise control A LOT, even on the back roads at 45mph.. With the mpg indicator, you can really see where you are using gas; acceleration. I am a lot more conscious of doing light acceleation now thanks to that dash board mpg indicator.
I get 25+ highway with mine too (60-65 mph). About 21 combined driving to work (13 miles each way) and local running around. My daughter and son-in-law only got about 23 on the highway when they borrowed it for a long trip recently. They do drive a lot faster than me and it was loaded with two adults, 4 kids and luggage. They get about the same with their 06 Grand Caravan with a 3.8.
Did either of you two (or anyone else on the forum here) notice any improvements or changes in MPG after driving the vehicle several thousand miles?? Or has your vehicle always performed about the same?? I just drove mine on the highway for about 1 hour, it tops at 23.5MPG (just going by the trip computer). What I've noticed too is that our touring model seems to suck down gas when it idles. It doesn't run fast (~750RPM), but that trip computer's MPG sure comes down awfully fast...
I just drove mine on the highway for about 1 hour, it tops at 23.5MPG (just going by the trip computer).
If it's anything like the trip computer in my Sebring the actual mpg will calculate out to be 1-2 mpg higher than that. I noticed a slight overall fuel economy improvement after around 5,000 miles.
