I recently read a article in Popular mechanics that stated if you use a heavy oil than the manufacturers suggest you will get poorer gas mileage and increase the wear on your engine. They specifically discussed 5W-20W motor oil and the thinner oil used in the new generations of engines reduces friction, heat and increases gas mileage. They stated that at least three oil companies are producing this new oil, only they did not list the brand names. I have read a lot of complaints of poor gas mileage with the Tribute and even Edmunds long-term road tests are showing as low as 13 MPG.

Is anyone using heavier oil in their Tributes? How is your mileage?

I have had a Mazda Tribute LX-V6 Desert Metallic with ABS, side air impact bags, Moonroof, six CD Player, Tow package and wheel locks on order since October 2, 2000. It may be built this month, but I not holding my breath. I received a quote for 21,860 plus tax and license, but I understand that the price may have gone up since October by about $500 to $600. I may rethink my order.

I have been checking on and off and seems to me the Grille design on the Tribute can cause debris to fly thru and damage the honeycomb looking metal piece (radiator piece ???) behind the grille. It is doing so in my Tribute. These dents are quite evident looking straight into the vehicle. I am not sure if this damgage in anyshape affects the vehicle performance. Its a pretty stupid grille design in my opinion. the "dings" do stand out and look pretty ugly.

Did some checking on other vehicle designs, and most manufacturers use a honeycomb mesh Grille design to hide the stuff behind. This probably also helps in preventing stones, debris damage to the inside. The Escape has this mesh style Grille, why couldnt Mazda add it in their opening ?

Anycasel, This is a complaint going into Mazda USA along with stupid glass design foglamp. Have to talk to dealer to have both changed. no way am I accepting a 4 month old vehicle to look like a 5 yr old one just because someone forgot to do stope chip tests on the Tribute.

Anyone else experiencing this problem ?

I've got an XLT built in March with less than a 1,000 mile on it. A few days ago I noticed the slight fuel smell coming from the air vents when starting the engine. It's only noticeable for a second or two. I thought the new silicone gasket was supposed to have fixed that problem?? Anyone else having the same problem on a newer Escape? Also, for some reason I'm getting terrible mileage. I filled up the tank a few days ago, driven 125 miles and already down to 1/2 tank. I don;t have a lead foot and don't see what the problem is. Guess I'll ask when I take it in for the fuel smell. I'll keep ya posted on the results.
  • ke4yydke4yyd Member Posts: 30
Do not depend on the gas guage to determine your MPG. Most owners have noticed that the gauge moves off full very quickly. You will have more gas in your tank then the gauge indicates.
  • drhb1drhb1 Member Posts: 14
VERY impressed with the quality of the Tribute. Gas mileage does indeed seem to be horrible at this 2400 mile mark - I fill the tank back up at the 1/4 needle mark; do others fill it at the empty mark due to there supposedly being more gas than is read by the gauge? Does one IGNORE the reading on the gas gauge??

Note the Crash results on the NHTSA site just came out, and the Tribscape received 5 stars for the driver and 4 for the passenger, with 5 stars on the side impact. VERY good results indeed!

Has anyone had problem with their 4 x 2 Escape pulling to the right? I was told by tech that it was normal for these vehicles to do that?? Am worried that I will be wearing out my tires very fast.

i think its torque steer. front wheel drive cars sometimes pull to one side during acceleration. saabs have nasty torque steer.

I ordered my XLT 4WD on Jan 14. Build date of April 02 with a delivery date of 04/30. I am this close to saying "To Hell With This!"

To TANG your Escape should not pull. Mine is the straightest driving vehicle I have ever owned.

Not convinced yet that either of us will get delivery by the end of April, but at least at this point we seem to be getting the same story from our dealers for orders placed in Jan. Good Luck!

Sorry about being a little "short" with my message. My salesman originally told me 4-6 weeks (I laughed). At 6-8 weeks (I shrugged). At 8-10 weeks (I frowned). At 10-12 weeks (I called the manager). Today I received a message on my answering machine that said my "status on the weekly sheet" had not changed.
I'm actually kinda stuck. The manager said that the delay was due to a "material delay"(Yeah right) & promised not to depreciate my trade-in since it was not MY fault for the delay. If I go somewhere else now, I not only will lose on my trade-in, but would have to pay the price ($186.00) increase on a new order. The upside is that hopefully all recall & TSB issues should be resolved by the time we get our cars.
    I'm in New York.

Drive with your headlights on during the day to Make other drivers ahead See You Coming and you reduce your chance of getting into a serious auto accident by 30% according to Canadian government tests. Daytime headlights are now mandated there.

(cg205) in the US posts: >Over many years of investigating hundreds of automobile accidents the number one comment made to me by people involved in wrecks, especially "failure to yield" wrecks was " I looked but Didn't See the other car." < Prevent the Terror of having someone make a left turn or pull out of an intersection right in your face because you haven't Made Them See You! This is why (cg205) keeps the headlight switch of his new Escape turned On to automatically have daylight running headlights whenever he drives, and lets the 'auto-off' turn them off when he parks. Simply doing this will give You 30% risk reduction Immediately! Even much more if your car color (like Parchment Gold or the pale silver expected in 2002) makes you especially hard to see coming.

Unfortunately there is an irritating headlight-on warning chime that is now just a nuisance since there is an auto off in 30 seconds! I have emailed the Ford engineers responsible for this at escape2@ford.com and suggested they reduce this alarm to one single polite ding. Please try it out and email them with what you think! If anyone can find a simple way to turn off this particular alarm in our present Escapes (without shunting the door switch and compromising other alarms) please post it!

Installing Ford's DRL accessory #13B218 costs $57.14 plus labor. It turns on the headlights with the ignition and reduces the lamp voltage and intensity during the daytime so they last longer. Installation means locating and splicing into about eight wires under the removable storage panel located between the radio and floor. The wiring instructions in the kit that I saw did not include a color-coded wiring matrix for Escape yet so you have to locate the correct wires with a tester or somehow get the matrix from Ford. If you do, please post it.

Hi all, I'm also still awaiting my Trib that I ordered in November. I'm in the PA by Philla area. So far, it's been 5 months plus and counting! Hope this was worth the wait!

Notice quite a number of Tributes and Escape with their front Rims filled with brake dust. seems like the front brakes are working too hard. how many or you have the same problem?
  • chytraeuschytraeus Member Posts: 27
Ed, the brakes are not "working too hard" it is just a reality of life with our Escapes and Tributes. The plus side is that our SUV has the BEST braking system of any SUV, large or small, and nearly ever other vehicle: period. The down side is that the brakes use soft pads, hence generatinga lot of brake dust. The solution is to install harder pads (less braking performance). JCWitney also sells a device you put on the inside of your tire to catch dust.

I have had my tribute for almost 4 months and within the last couple of weeks I encountered the fuel smell. If it wasn't for this site I don't know if the dealer would have known what to do. The dealer got the part that was listed in #721 from the Ford dealer. Remind them as stated in issue #675 that the vehicle should remain overnight for the silicone to dry. The smell is now gone and I like my tribute again. Except for a few rattles on parts that the dealer has replaced without hesitation, I have no complaints. Has anyone purchased the spoiler on the back and does it actually help stop the rain from coming down the back window or is it just for show.

    hmmmmmmmmm, thats odd.

I ordered a 4wd xlt in late january (i think it was 1/21) and I picked it up mid March. It was an x-plan order, so not sure if that makes a difference or not, but it seems odd you should be waiting so long... maybe the dealer is yanking you around and delayed putting in your order or didnt get an allocation? I am in KC where they are made, so delivery time was practically nil.

So far, its been a good car - none of the reported problems have been experienced (other than the erratic gas gauge and the shifter in the way of the radio complaints).

    Good luck...

Well after reading several replies about how long it has actually taken for delivery it seems in general it's running about 5 months. Since I ordered the end of Jan I'm guessing maybe the end of June. Of course the dealer has already given two dates - early April and then early May. My guess is that they're just stringing us along to keep us out of the market. I live in Baltimore and ordered the Trib from a dealer in Va. who is on the Unity Buying Plan. My price of the loaded ES was about $2000 under list. The big question for me of course is will he deliver the goods, or sell the car to someone else at list or higher when it finally arrives. Fortunately I'm not in a big hurry and there is no trade in involved. So far it looks like all of us on the East coast are about in the same boat on expected delivery. I too hope it's worth the wait. A neighbor has an ES delivered in Dec and loves it. Was ordered in July.

the tribute's owner manual gives out wrong information on the headlamp type...it's H4 instead of 9007 as stated in the manual....damn it...>< it cost me $20 for ordering the wrong bulbs....stupid munual....
  • k9cop1k9cop1 Member Posts: 78
Finally! I picked my 4WD XLT Black/Parchment/moonroof & privacy glass today! 94 days from the order date. I lost 200.00 on my trade-in (Excessive mileage), but missed 2 price increases ($186.00). So it was a "wash".
Car runs great. Gotta get used to the power & braking. I drove a 4 cyl. Celica for 8 years. I put 40 miles on today & no odor of gas yet! LOL
I'll keep updating this board of any problems though (hopefully none).
    Good luck to everyone else!

I remember that you were talking about getting an Escape a few months ago. Congratulations. I picked my Bright Red Escape up on March 15 or so. I love it! You are right about getting used to the increased power. I drove a Ford Tempo (four cylinder piece of junk!) for TEN YEARS before getting the Escape.Man, talk about a "step up."

I drove around my new car today to get a better feel for it. No problems. On the dash (driver side),the panel facing the door keeps popping loose. I pushed it back in but after I drive a while, it pops back out. Minor problem though. All in all a great little SUV!

Just ordered my tribute es loaded on the s-plan. But dealer told me and contract stated if mazda raised the prices before delivery, my cost would go up also. At the rate people in NY are getting thier tribs I may be looking at a 2002. I've heard the price my go up as much as 1000$. Has anyone else locked in their price and how? thanks.
  • k9cop1k9cop1 Member Posts: 78
Thanks. I hope your enjoying your "little fire engine". LOL I can really get used to this car. Great ride. I fixed the loose panel myself, while I was washing the "baby" today (1st time). Lot of brake dust on the front rims. Soap & water work fine. I'm afraid of dust shields. I heard they may somehow warp your rotors! I,m going to get a small 2" mirror add-on for my passenger window mirror. All most wiped out a Fiat today on a lane change (whew)!

I just picked my 4WD/XLT on Friday. After a 3 & 1/2 month wait, I paid the original price. That was regardless of 2 price increases ($186.00 total). Dealers know this & I wouldn't settle for anything less.

Well Well Well where is bobmazada? Where is vince8? Where are all those triscape lovers who hounded us Sante Fe folks about "saftey" over and over again. bobmazada practically posted an engineering book on the far superior designs included in the triscape. they asked us, "How much is your family's saftey worth?" Well, where are you now???

The predicted "terrible" crash test results are in but surprize the the lowest ranking goes to Ford/Mazada and the best ranking to the Sante Fe.

So now we have huge quality questions compounded by huge saftey concerns....why are people lining up to buy the triscape...let me say their logic just "escapes" me.
  • chytraeuschytraeus Member Posts: 27
I hear you re. the side mirror issue. I've always put a little bubble mirror on the driver side mirror and have been considering the same for passenger side mirror too. MUCH safer driving that way.
  • jericho_avejericho_ave Member Posts: 37
    hahaha...

Rsharp83, i knew I would see you here as soon as I learned of the crash test result...
    rubbing it in further huh??

btw, like rsharp83, I too considered the Tribute but gladly switched to the SantaFe after reading horror stories in this board. I've had my share of problems with the SF too but overall, I'm satisfied with it. I like keepings tabs of the Triscape problem board once in a while to check things out.

    drive safely everyone!!!
  • k9cop1k9cop1 Member Posts: 78
Ptmccain! Where are you when we need ya!! LOL
Seriously though, I am disturbed about the findings of these crash test results. I just picked-up mine (4WD/XLT) on Thursday. Guess I'll have to drive carefully from now on!! LOL
The ignition & shifter are a little inconvienent, but nothing to fuss over. No wind or otherwise load noises. No odor of gas. I'll get back to ya about the mileage.
All in all, a peppy car thats fun to drive !

Just hope everything happens head-on, those scores are great! I still like mine at 2700 miles, and don't even mind frequent fill-ups with $2.00 gas.

I have had my 2001 Tribute for about 4 months/8000 miles. While traveling down a very straight road with even pavement, no other traffic
at 45 mph, I heard a sudden pop in the engine. I immediately loss all power steering. Luckily I was near where my husband parks for carpool and managed to fight the steering about 2 miles to that parking lot and got into my old Chrysler van with 160,000 to continue my trip to pick up kids from school. The dealer towed the vehicle in and was told it had a broken power steering tensioner. Their only explanation was perhaps a rock had flown up and hit it. HUH! I may be a woman, but I'm not stupid. Also we had been having "the smell". It will take changing six gaskets to fix the smell. Now on the 2nd full day in the shop and they are saying it probably won't be ready until tomorrow(waiting on the gaskets). I'm glad I kept my old van!
Anyone else had a tensioner problem?
  • bshapbshap Member Posts: 23
make sure your smell gets fixed. i didnt notice mine all winter until i started using the AC and now its horrible. as for the loss of power steering, it is possible for a rock to damage your steering, but the fact that a front tire kicked up a rock fast enough to hit something almost exactly to the side of the wheel's point of contact to the ground is pretty impressive. talk to your service guy, he should know better
  • 1jimv11jimv1 Member Posts: 108
A casual look under the hood shows that the engine is more of a barrier on the right side and the battery and various electronics and cables aren't so much of a barrier on the left. This seems like it might be good design for a right hand drive vehicle in a crash test. I'm sure the Mazda designers worked very hard to design a safe vehicle. I wonder how Tribute would do in a similar Japanese right-hand drive crash test where the impact would happen on the right side. Let's not be too critical of the initial Japanese design but perhaps question what was given up when it was then adopted as a left hand drive vehicle for US drivers. - Just a quick untested observation. Take a look yourself!

Well after reading all the horror stories here I'm just a little leary if I want to take delivery of my ES Trib tomorrow. Was ordered on 1/22/01 and the dealer called yesterday 4/25 to tell me it's in and ready for delivery. Took about 90 days which I think is pretty good. Includes the ABS breaks, moon roof, the works. Should I or shouldn't I? Think I will!

I've had my ES for almost a month now, yeah I think the IIHS test result stink, yeah I sniff at the AC everytime I start it to see if I can smell the smell (not yet, I don't think), yeah it has a ford engine and trany, BUT, I would buy the same one today! No question that I love this cute-ute. From the way it looks to the way it drives I can't get enough of it. Oh well have fun with your new ES, what colour did ya get?
  • lemonscapelemonscape Member Posts: 1
I wish I had known about this board before I bought my Escape, if I had, I probably would not have bought one. I am the not so proud owner of a bright "lemon" yellow XLT 4x4. It has every option available. I purchased it for $300 over dealer invoice in November, it took only 2 weeks to come in. At first my wife and I were absolutely delighted with the vehicle. However, after the 3 weeks and 1100 miles, the steering went out. I mean it WENT OUT. It would only turn left.(This was with my wife driving and my 18 month old son in the car!) Fortunately, my wife was able to get it safely off the road without crashing. It turned out to be a defective steering gear. 17 days in the shop later, we get it back only to get the windshield wiper recall notice, oh well, back to the shop it goes. It was in the shop for two more days for just an inspection! Well, within days of getting it back, I began to notice the fuel smell. I first noticed it just walking into my garage, the smell of fuel was so strong that I thought there was a fuel leak somewhere. Needless to say this only got worse. Here we go again, back to the dealer for another 5 days to have the intake gaskets replaced (the service manager tried at first to deny that there was even a TSB regarding this.) Anyway, we got the car back and so far no more fuel smell. We were hopeful that all the "bugs" were taken care of and that would be that. Well...my wife reported to me a few days ago that the car sometimes refuses to start. The engine will turn over normally but will not fire. After about three or four attempts (of grinding away with the starter) it will finally fire. This has now happened three different times. With this latest trip to the mechanic it looks like we might be getting awfully close to the magic 30 days in the shop for it be officially classified as a lemon. Anyway, just to let everyone know, I am a diehard Ford fan. I have owned seven different Ford vehicles and still own a Mustang with 217,000 miles on the odo, w/ NO problems EVER. The vehicle that the Escape replaced was a 92 Explorer that gave us over 160,000 troublefree miles. Needless to say, we are very dissappointed. The vehicle drives like a dream, nothing else we test drove was in the same league in power, comfort, and refinement, however, my first priority is reliability and safety and so far, the Escape has fallen far short.

I am writing this to give food for thought for anyone considering purchasing this vehicle. I am not here to bash the Escape or Ford. I won't even begin to get into to the dealer service, only to say I don't think I will buy another Ford.

I was starting my Tribute LX recently and heard a pop from the engine. I could then start the engine, but it would stall if I took my foot off the gas. "Vacuum hose," I think to myself. Sure enough, the big hose on the rear top of the engine had popped off. It's not held on by anything, and even has some oil or something in the connection, (probably to help keep it sealed.) Anyway, if it happens again I'll probably put a hose clamp on it...

Thanks for the note. Picked up my ES yesterday in the Wash DC area and drove to downtown Balto. Then through traffic and out to the country. Total of about 75 miles. No problems yet. Like the way Trib drives and handles, although I doubt if my wife will care for the ride. Too stiff compared to her E320 Benz. But that's comparing apples and oranges. Anyway the color we selected is Chestnut Mica which I would describe as a metallic brown, with the brown having lots of red undertones. I think it really looks sharpe. Hope that by now all of the problems previously mentioned have been cleared up with new production. The salesman has assured me they have, but who believes car salesman? We'll see. Fred
  • k9cop1k9cop1 Member Posts: 78
Good Luck with your Trib. I picked up my 4WD/XLT Escape last week & have already washed it twice! LOL Great car, handles well. I'm taking a lot of ribbing from my friends about the "crash test" though.
Listen, I would be more concerned if the test said the car would blow up if rear ended (can anyone say "Pinto"?). I at least can see whats in front of me.
I drove a Toyota Celica convertable for the last 8 years (112,000 miles) & traded in a "creampuff". I hope I can say the same for my Escape (knock on wood) down the road!
    Dave
P.S. We did come out on top in the NHSTA test!

"Listen, I would be more concerned if the test said the car would blow up if rear ended (can anyone say "Pinto"?)"

Well in case you hadn't noticed the same people who lied to America about the Pinto and covered up what they knew to be serious concerns is the same company that is producing the Triscape.

Not to mention the recent accusations about the saftey of the Ford Explorer and what did Ford know and when did they know it.

Quality control and Saftey are both serious concerns for the Triscape.

I wouldn't trust this car as far as I could throw it.

The only way this guy can feel good about his purchase of that butt-ugly POS the Santa Fe is by coming here and insulting Tribute and Escape owners. Just ignore him. Don't reply to him, at all, it just encourages him. He doesn't have much a life, so just pity him and let him enjoy his little fantasy world. What a pathetic creature.

Ford claims the Escape got 5 stars in frontal crash tests done by the U.S. government and 4 stars for side impact?? What was the difference in this test? The Escape is going to take a beating on sales for this.
Hyundai... LOL! the name makes me laugh.. Ugly, in one word, the other word.. its a Hyundia need I say more...

    play nice, or else...

Well, there's nothing I could do, but play nice anyways.

And boy, I would hate to run into Lynn when she's really upset :)
  • rsharp83rsharp83 Member Posts: 82
"Hyundai... LOL! the name makes me laugh"

Laugh all you want vince. But with 5 recalls, fuel smells, numerous other reported problems and a dismal crash test performance it would seem the triscape is the laugher.

And style is subjective. I like the styling of the Sante Fe but I didn't buy it just because of style. Again, you may think it is ugly but at least is is safe and well constructed.

I have a friend who is thinking of getting rid of her Lincoln Navagitor and wants a Sante Fe. So some people like the styling.
  • curreycurrey Member Posts: 144
Yeah, I know what you mean about trusting a sales person. As for the Tribute, I think that they did finally work out all the bugs by now. I would also like to think that they have corrected the fuel smell problem at the factory. Who knows, all I know is that I am over 3000 miles now and have not noticed a fuel smell.

As for your colour, Chestnut Mica, I am familiar with it as that and classic white were tied as our second choice. However, we were able to get our first choice of Desert Metallic. I bet that you will really get a deep shine out of that Chestnut Mica though. What are you going to wax it with?

As for problems (Hey, that is what this forum is for), the one I found is quality control. I know I am being picky. The insulation mat in the spare tire well is folded over on its self in one corner. Ok, this is picky, however, It is put in there with glue and I can't undue it to correct the problem. That and there are some plastic pieces that need to be pushed into place a little better than they were. Other than that no problems so far, except with me. The other day I was driving home from work with the seats folded down (the night before I used the back for a load of baby stuff) and I heard a rattling. Drove me nuts. Could not find it when I got home although I new it was coming from the seat right behind me. Next morning on the drive in to work, same noise. I was almost there and almost out of my mind when I realized what it was. The stupid latch on my brief case was the culprit. Needless to say, I was relieved that it was not a noise from the Tribute. Oh well, I guess this long rant is really useless, but sometimes it feels good to let others laugh with us at our own mistakes and crazy searches for jingles, rattles and creaks.
I bet you never went searching for a rattle with that Mercedes, then again, your right Fred, it is a creature of a totally different species

    Thanks!

    I appreciate your support.
On to better things! The car is great. Decent gas mileage on the first tank (20 mpg). Good pick-up & braking. Very few of these in my area (LI/NY),so I get a lot of looks & inquiries.
    Later!

to believe that someone would sell a Lincoln Navigator for a Hyundia Santa Fe. Thats like taking 5 steps backwards.....or Trading in you Honda Accord for a Sonata, or Moving from a 5 bedroom 200K house to a 3 bedroom 100K house... or..... ok, enough....
OK, sorry about my laughter and picking on the styling of the Santa Fe. I guess its all personal preference. I still think the Santa Fe is UUUUUUGly.... :-))
