My father in law recently passed away and let behind 2009 Ford Fusion sitting in his garage. Car has not been driven in approx. 5 years. Do you think getting this car road worthy for sale if worth the risk of spending several hundred dollars attempting repairs only to find the cost will exceed repaired wholesale value minus salvage value?

This isn't to say that it does or doesn't need more than a battery. There is just no way to know until you get it running (what-ever it takes) and then start to observe any symptoms and have someone go through and catch up on all of the scheduled services.

You can certainly sell it as is without doing anything to it. However, with the price of used cars today, and its overall condition it could easily go on the high side of sale value if it was running, and it might just need a battery to accomplish that. It is unlikely that the battery has survived if it has sat discharged for a long period of time, so start with that. Check the fluid levels and add if necessary. Make sure you have a firm brake pedal and then see if it will fire up. Then see what you find from there.

thecardoc3 thanks for leaving a comment. I was thinking it would take a lot more than just a battery, but if that is all it takes well worth getting it fixed.

thecardoc3 thanks for clarifying. I was not planning on doing any work myself, thus I would need to invest some money on getting it towed, and paying to have repairs estimated. I should have mentioned that in the original post. Was leaning on taking it to a Ford dealer because it is subject to a do not drive, air bag safety recall. I was over at the house today and see dropping in a new battery would be easy and would make it easier to tow since cannot get it out of park without power.

"since cannot get it out of park without power." Ok I have since learned how to manually bypass the shift lever interlock. In my own defense the last time I had to push a car with a dead battery was probably the late 1980's, cars did not have a shift lever interlock back then.
