'09 Civic GX fuel light flashing

09 Civic GX had a hard time starting, then began to show no fuel + fuel light flashing. Got it to the station and filled it (it had over 1/2 a tank), then upon cranking, the fuel light started flashing and the fuel gauge drifted down to E. Car still runs fine. Disconnected the battery and the problem cleared for about 15 minutes. Short of the sending unit in the tank (big $$$ to fix) any ideas on what might cause this? The manual only says "problem with the fuel system." Tried a temp swap with a different computer to no avail.

I found an online manual that shows how to get to the sending unit for a non-CNG Civic (I thought I could at least check power/corrosion at the connector), but I'm not sure I can actually get in that way (remove back seat.)

I would just use the trip odometer to make sure I don't run out, but I'm afraid the wife might get stuck somewhere if it totally flakes out.
