In the MDX study guide, Acura states a front roll center of 6.2" and a rear roll center of 6.8". Does this in any way relate to the center of gravity figure that is needed to calculate the rollover potential or lack there of? If not, what is meant by roll center?

    Kinmanc:

Given that it is just "market prices at work" and nobody should be angry...

What happens if Sunnyvale informs you that your vehicle will not be in for 6 more months? They are terribly sorry, but the VIN they gave you was a mistake. (Meanwhile they sell it to someone else for 2k over msrp.)

Why should you be angry? Just market forces at work.

    Ebay:

After a quick review I couldn't see any POSITIVE feedback on any MDX sales. There were a few negatives (-1). I believe folks get an email account, set up an ebay name, and yank the chains of some (if not all) sellers.

Seems very iffy to buy a slot which is subject to the dealership's whim... Interesting to see if any bids actually do close for dollars. (William, I agree few folks would admit to actually paying those prices. You would, though, think that a closed deal would result in positive feedback...)

I'm looking for Acura MDX in chicago region. Most of the acura dealers told me that its booked till march and on the top of it if I go ahead with that then they will charge premium on MSRP, ranging from 1K to 3K. Is anybody bought MDX at MSRP recently in chicago Area??
  • albert123albert123 Member Posts: 71
need4spd, Redwood City(Hopkins) charges MSRP. But the wait is 5 months or more(other dearlers are probably the same though).

kinmanc, At Sunnyvale, you're guaranteed MSRP if you bought from them before. I got it at MSRP because I ordered early(July) and made a strong plead to them being dishonest charging markup without telling me.

bigdeal, I'm afraid that roll center is different than the center of gravity. I'm not sure if there is a mathematical way to compute center of gravity from the roll center. Here's a page that discusses roll center in excruciating detail; if you can compute center of gravity from it, you are amazing:

    http://members.aol.com/sccacuda/cars/5SmthTa.html

Ard, totally agree with you; if the transaction actually happened, you'd think there'd be positive feedback in some cases (from my wife's experiences on eBay, it's 50-50 or something close). I was just too lazy to look them up myself ;-)

I purchased my DM/Touring MDX from McGrath of Countryside two weeks ago at MSRP. I paid about $300 for wood dash and rear mud guard. I placed my order around mid-september. Hope it helps. Good Luck!

It may or may not be a 5 month wait at Hopkins, as it's always possible that the person(s) in front of you for the same color/model may get tired of waiting and buy something else, or take delivery at another dealer (nothing stops you from putting yourself on more than one list, which is why I think demand may die down a lot faster than most people think. I realize the MDX is a "value" compared to BMW and MBZ, but we're still talking about something that costs $35-40k!! There can't be that many people in that segment, can there??). Also, if you order one now, you probably have to wait that long no matter where you go in the Bay Area; the only difference is that you pay >MSRP. So, it seems you can either wait and pay MSRP, or wait and pay >MSRP.

A funny thing happened on the way to checking out all the buzz about the MDX ... I may buy one !

Wasn't really looking to buy, but test drove one
last night and was really impressed with looks,
    build, handling, cargo space, etc.

My Acura dealership (Nashville, TN) is tacking on a mandatory $1297 "added value package" that consists of paint sealant, wheel locks, floor mats
and rear mud guards, so base model is $36,147 plus
tax, title and license. About $38K all told. Is
    that an OK price?
  • epoeepoe Member Posts: 56
Ask that who the mandate is coming from? Honda motors is certainly not mandating it. Fly up north, stay in a hotel for the weekend, drive home while having enjoyed your own mandatory weekend getaway package! :)
  • ardvarkusardvarkus Member Posts: 90
    Figure the package is worth:
    $50 wax
    $30 wheel locks
    $50 rear flaps
$120 rubber floor mats (NOTE: Carpeted mats are free)

So, they are getting about $950 extra. (Unless they are "selling" you the standard mats...)

Here is the trick. Find another dealer, anywhere, who will sell at MSRP. Go back to your local guy, tell them that you'd like to work locally, but for $950 it isn't worth it. They'll need to come in at $xxx to earn your business.

If they agree, great. If they don't agree, you decide how much your time is worth. You can always call back and pay their price...

    Worth a try, no?

    Ard

PS Remember folks, call the PARTS counter to get pricing on the accessories that DON'T require an installation: Mats, cargo-net,tray,cover, separation net. Why pay the sales-department-price-including-installation for an accessory that you install and take out many times over the life of the car?

Well, after two months of waiting I finally got the call from the dealer today telling me my mesa beige w/touring came in today.
I've been reading the posts daily and I plan on posting more myself in the weeks to come to try and relate my experiences with my new car.
As far as the dealer goes, I'll hold off my final opinion on them until I take delivery, but so far they've been just fine.(MSRP no unwanted accessories).

Just put on the Vinyl nose mask.
What a pain in the [non-permissible content removed]...
A lot of stretching and it fits very tight in some places and a little wrinkly..
But for the price and the comparative costs of the clear, .. well, i'll leave that to you... ;)

I am definitely in the market for a MDX but at least twice a year, I go fishing at the Outer Banks, NC. It requires driving on some pretty soft sand. I am concerned about the 8" clearance. Has anyone had any experience driving on sand yet?

Regarding your MDX query in Nashville, I agree with Ard that your local dealer is trying to take in an extra ~$900 profit with that $1297 mandatory "value" package.

I would proceed as Ard suggested, but if you are not successful in getting your local dealer to lower the price anywhere near $900, then you might also try to see if he might consider throwing in any other accessories into that $1297 package. For example, I purchased our MDX from a dealer who was not willing to lower the price, but she did give me a free cargo cover.

I'm not suggesting that having a couple extra "freebies" is as good of a solution as getting your local dealer to drop his inflated price. I'm just saying that it may be an idea for you to consider if you decide you really want to buy locally, and your local dealer won't budge on the price.

State Farm Insurance has dropped their discount for airbags and automatic safety belts in favor of a new system that they claim is based on claim payments for driver and passenger injuries. E.g. the higher the claims, the more the premium for medical payments and personal injury.

They list a plethora of vehicles and their "ratings" at:

    http://www.statefarm.com/media/release/discount.htm

It has two interesting lists; their overall list, and a summary of the top finishers when it comes to combined injury claims and vehicle damage claims. The only SUV's I noticed were some variants of Suburbans and a Yukon. Most of Volvo's line, the MB E-class, lots of vans, etc.

Comments? I thought it interesting, the basis on actual paid medical costs and how that might correlate to safety as actually experienced. However, I also see a lot of holes in that methodology. Plus I trust insurance companies less than I trust election commissions.

Also, the "top vehicles" list isn't a true safety list since it weighs vehicle repair costs equally.

Like most insurance methodologies, vehicles with generally younger demographics usually come out poorer when analyzing costs, on the basic theory that there's more aggressive and higher risk driving than with vehicles with older and/or more conservative demographics.

Well, I finally found a dealer to sell the MDX at MSRP ($34850) with no dealer add-ons. However, I had to bypass all 4 local Seattle dealers and go to Oregon, but it saved me $2000. They will even drive it up to me and hand over the paperwork. Much better then the smug dealers abound. Now this is the free market in action - low bidder gets my business! I refused to pay over MSRP as a matter of principle, and I recommend all others do the same if able - call around and find a fair deal.
  • marksmacmarksmac Member Posts: 8
Wow, this is a wide SUV - it really doesn't fit in our 2 car garage with the other regular car.
And I'm in Silcon Valley, so another house is the price of 10 MDXs.... Anyway, it's a nice car, and the wideness puts more metal between the people and the rest of the world - which increases safety. Now I gotta toss out those shelves on the side of my garage - I guess I should call customer care? Anyway, the wife likes it, and it's a nice SUV - amazing how nice it smells - even the exhaust smells good!
  • need4spdneed4spd Member Posts: 92
Yeah. The specs show something like 77" wide but that's with the mirrors folded in. The brochure is misleading because the 77" is shown at the edges of the fully extended mirrors. With the mirrors out in normal viewing position I think it's more like 85". Many garages are only 90-95" wide, so that leaves only 2.5-5" on either side. TIGHT! We still fold both ours to park it, until we get braver or more used to the size. I suppose after some more practice, we'll just fold the driver's side. It's also adviseable to fold the street side mirror if parallel parking on a narrow street. Electric folding feature would be really welcome and a nice improvement to next year's model. (And sell a retrofit kit, why don't ya, Acura!)

    bilmat:

You are probably right. So far, I have only seen a black MDX at Orchard Supply, and my wife saw one on Oregon Expressway. But I am sure there's going to be more as people start getting theirs MDXs. At the place I work, there are 4 or 5 X5's, a dozen M class, and maybe a dozen RX300's. I'll probably be the first to get a MDX (I hope).

    ardvarkus:

If that happens, I'll be upset, maybe for a couple of days. But I think there's a difference between a dealer that lies, cheats, and reneges on promises to one that says "Look, here's what going to cost you. Take it or leave it".

I have lived in Bay area for more than 10 years, and have come to like it for its mild weather, diverse culture (read: good Chinese food :) ), and excellent job opportunities. I have also come to accept the fact that I have to pay more for things sometimes.

If I don't get my MDX this year, I am seriously considering getting a MY2002 model instead. Hopefully, Acura would fix most of the bugs (though there have been very few so far) with the 2nd year model, add more colors (both exterior and interior), and add more options (such as HID or stability control).

When I was looking at the MDX I went to a couple of dealerships and the best one I encountered was Pauly Acura in Highland Park. They were charging MRSP with no add ons. Of course this was a couple of months ago so I don't know what they are doing now. I really liked the people there. Very nice. Talk with Bob. Good luck.

    Hey guys,
I was jus wondering if any of you know what goes into the installation of some accessories. I ordered quite a few accessories, but there are 3 that don't seem to add up to me.

    Cargo Cover
    Cargo Net
    Wheel Locks

My dealer is saying that it will take them about 1.3 hours to install these. Do the net hooks come standard on all MDXs? What about the cargo cover installation? What is involved in it? And the wheel locks? Why should they take 15 minutes for the dealer to install? Can I install them myself?
  • marksmacmarksmac Member Posts: 8
One thing I forgot to add is that when I saw the MDX at the dealership and on the road, the front part looked great. In my garage, I notice the cheesy plastic parts on the front grill - it looks like cheap plastic, and it moves when you press it. Oh well - maybe it's to "give" on impact to help with the safety ratings.
Also, I got the cargo cover, when it's off you really can't store it easily in the MDX - so even if it fits in your garage -you need to allocate space to put things like the cargo cover. Still, I like it better than any other SUV in it's class.
  • wmquanwmquan Member Posts: 1,817
marksmac, congratulations on your new MDX! It is a wide beast. We haven't had any problems in our garage, but our house isn't too old and I think a lot of newer homes accommodate the monsters a lot of people drive nowadays.

nyckid, the cargo cover is very easy to install yourself. You just take a screwdriver and pop off two little plastic covers in the sides of the cargo area. You then snap the cargo cover housing into the uncovered slots. Easy, huh?

The cargo net is similarly easy; it just snaps onto hooks already in the cargo area, either flat on the floor, or in vertical position.

Both items come with instructions. I don't know about the wheel locks.

Check Hondacuraworld; they have low prices and people here who have ordered from them have found them very responsive and responsible. They sell the cargo cover for $104, and the cargo net for $37.70, wheel locks for $32.50, and shipping is free.
  • epoeepoe Member Posts: 56
All are easy to install.. And all will (should) come with installation instructions.
locks: take one lug nut off and put the wheel lock (aka special head lug nut) on and torque to 80-ft lbs. 1 wheel-lock-lug-nut on each wheel.
cargo cover: pop out the plastic cap in the back of the car w/ a standard screwdriver and simply put the cargo cover in the exposed hole (the cover compresses slightly on a spring to allow installation).
cargo net: i dont have this, but i think it just clips with hooks to various locations..

Does anyone know or have tried Moonroof visor and confirm it reduces the wind noise? This is the only major issue we have with MDX(has roof rack). The noise becomes very noticeable at 65MPH or higher. I checked all the old discussions and none of them confirmed this.
  • epoeepoe Member Posts: 56
One discussion someone noted that it certainly reduces/emiminated the turbulance from having the moonroof open.. (that says something positive..)

personally, i don't care for the look of the visor on the roofline. but i believe they're functionally valuable.

I was wondering where is DVD placed in Nav system. And how would one upgrade to the newer version of DVD?

    Thanks
  • sandomansandoman Member Posts: 3
about the size of this big rig i went out and measured my garage it is only 82" wide 79" high. i have an mdx on order called the dealer. he went and measured and said it is only 77" at the widest point is he shining me on. im ready to look at an x5.
  • mdx1466mdx1466 Member Posts: 2
The DVD player is under passenger seat. To upgrade, you just need replace old DVD with the newer version DVD disk.
  • dkemdkem Member Posts: 2
    Thanks for your response.

One more question - what type of DVD player is it? Can it be used for anything else other than Nav system? Just curious.
  • imsileunimsileun Member Posts: 2
How severe is the wind noise caused by base carrier (roof rack)? Has anybody compared Basic MDX (without roof rack) with Touring version in terms of wind noise? This question would matter to anybody trying to install roof rack on her Basic MDX.
  • shahdshahd Member Posts: 5
Is it easy to install? What's involved? Can I install it myself?
  • need4spdneed4spd Member Posts: 92
Dealer is reading the specs out of the book/brochure. It is 77" but only with the mirrors folded in. If your garage opening is really only 82" wide you will have to fold the mirrors every time and still it will be tight. I don't think getting an X5 will help much. Even at a "true" 77" it's still going to leave you only 2.5" each side. 79" in height is a bit short, too. I don't recall the specs on height, but it's gotta be close to that, and I'll bet that the height spec doesn't include the roof rack, which adds probably 3".
  • need4spdneed4spd Member Posts: 92
Actually, you can store it in the car. There are two sets of pop off covers. One right behind the second row seats and one right behind the third row. You can keep it in the car behind the second, then if you have to carry a passenger in the third row, just store it out of the way behind the third row. As someone else said, the ends are spring loaded, so you just pop it in. I don't know why it would take 1.3 hrs. to install the cargo cover, net and wheel locks.
  • mdx1466mdx1466 Member Posts: 2
Looks like a regular DVD player to me but the manual says it can not play other DVD. I'd hope the DVD player can play movie on my Navi screen.
There must be a legal issue forbidding them to do so.
  • albert123albert123 Member Posts: 71
I remember someone posted a while ago it's a pretty simple job(definitely easier than 70+ screws for running board). I'm thinking about getting to reduce the wind noise at high speed.
  • sandomansandoman Member Posts: 3
i just went out and measured again. the garage opening is 82" but the actual garage opens to about 95" so i think the x5 would be ok. i also measured my current car a clk cab and it measures 77" across mirror to mirror and that fits fine in the garage. just tight getting in.
  • sandomansandoman Member Posts: 3
height on mdx 71.3 vs 67.2 on x5 garage height 79"
  • need4spdneed4spd Member Posts: 92
Width of the MDX being an issue for some, I noticed today that the upmarket Acura RL sedan boasts "driver's and passenger's power remote body-colored heated folding outside mirrors" as std., so it shouldn't be that hard for Acura to add this to next year's MDX.
  • bilmatbilmat Member Posts: 53
    Moonroof visor/Wind Noise:

I have the visor installed on my MDX. The one I test drove didn't have one, but I did flip the moon roof up while doing about 50 mph, then slid it to its full open position to check for noise and buffeting. As near as I can recall, the moonroof visor on my MDX helps reduce the wind noise some (not a lot), but it significantly reduces the buffeting of the air that enters the vehicle.

Height: Perhaps my MDX is "vertically challenged," but my measurements show the following: Floor to the top of the front rack: 71 inches. Floor to the top of the rear rack: 72 inches. Floor to the top of the antenna: 74 inches. And yes, I have the recommended 42 psi of pressure in the Michelins.

Width: With the mirrors extended: 86 inches. With the mirrors folded: 77 inches. Interestingly enough, the driver's mirror appears to protrude one inch further than the passenger side mirror. Go figure!

DVD/Nav System: It's illegal in most (if not all) states to have the capability of viewing a movie that can be seen by the driver while the car is in motion.

Got some advice for MDX buyers. Just placed my order on a beige base. It's going to arrive in only a month, vs. the 3-4 mo. at other dealers. The trick? GO TO A SMALLER DEALERSHIP. The larger dealers in my area had Huge lists. Maybe I just got lucky. If i"m not getting jerked around, that is. I'm paying MSRP - $400. Free pen stripping, free mud guards (rear), and the "free" carpet mats that some dealers charge for. lug. rack, cargo net, and side steps at cost.

Much better than the original deal I had at a larger dealer. I was on the wait list for March, at MSRP, plus prices quoted for above options at about MSRP (around 10% premium). Nice experience, friendly, but definitely no haggle factoring there.

There might be something hiding here I don't know, but I think everything is OK. Just something others may want to try.

My garage door is 96" wide and i 'feel' like i have about 4-4.5" on each side of my actual opening when i pull in/back out... Obviously, my 8' door is slightly larger than my actual opening.. Hope this info assists.
  • kenyeekenyee Member Posts: 738
Are you sure 42psi is correct? Check your driver's door specs for the pressure. 42 sounds more like a max pressure value for tires. Most tires are set to roughly 30psi.
  • bilmatbilmat Member Posts: 53
That 42 psi was a typo I missed and the spellchecker couldn't have caught. It should have read 32 psi, which is the recommended cold tire pressure according to both the manual and the door sticker.

    Well all,

I had a chance to drive it in a 10" snow storm and it is rock solid and inspires confidence. Don't think you need winters (at least for the Michelins). I stopped purposely on my very steep driveway and it pulls out extremely well. The only thing I noticed is that with the power on it will tend to plow forward until the rear end kicks in and then it acts more like a rear wheel drive vehicle. Takes a little getting use to but its not a problem. If you let the power off it comes right around. I love these vehicles, in fact I just took delivery on my second today.
  • kenyeekenyee Member Posts: 738
    Any snow pics? :-)
  • fatchancefatchance Member Posts: 1
In the December '00 issue of Car and driver it states that: "Off-road, you push a button to deliver maximum torque to the rear wheels--as much as 56 percent, but this works only in first or second grears and below 18 mph. How does the drivetrain work when driving at 35 mph or 40 mph in deep snow? Is there power to the rear wheels at a much less percentage?
