I agree with you about the second row seats, the only way I can get the straps to work is to move one of the fronts seats back when the second row is strapped to tighten it up. It'd also be nice if they could be easily removed like the third row.
I'm really thinking about getting a new Sequoia, mainly for the navigation, and second row captain chairs, with another huge center console in the second row. Of course the extra hp doesn't hurt either
Another name for the rear drive shaft. The grease fitting is located about 1/4 the way back on the shaft between the rear of the transmission and the differential. Load it up with a grease gun. Done! No stop light "bumps".
I have been seriously contemplating on buying a new Toyota Sequoia. Here's my dilemma: 1. Is the 42 hp difference bet '04 and '05 significant enough to warrant paying the price difference? 2. I read somewhere that the 2006 model will be a redesign. Please confirm? 3. Can't decide whether to get 2WD or 4WD. I live in Northern VA area where winter is not that rough. Is it worth paying the $2K difference? 4. What's the pros and cons of getting allow wheel packages with 17" vs 16" wheels? 5. Would also appreciate if people would share prices paid on their new Seq.
Sorry for so many questions. Thank you so much for any help anyone can provide.
I see on the internet that the SR5 is offering Navi as an option, yet I cannot find a 2005 SR5 with Navi in the southeast area. Are all dealers only offering Navi in the Limited model? What is the deal with the woodgrain dash? I prefer the metallic look and all the Limiteds in the southeast are upfitted with the woodgrain. Anyone else having these issues with their area dealers?
Is the spoiler on the Toyota Sequoia (or 4Runner for that matter) functional, or is it merely asthetic? I have to say, I think it's really ugly, but, if it enhances performance, I might have a different opinion. Thank you all for your thoughts!
I think its function is to clear the back window not performance. I agree it is not attractive and my back window is never very dirty so I guess it works, but I would like to hear from someone who does not have one!!
I am still here too. My 01 Seq has now 63K and nor major complaints, except the little plastic things that annoyingly fall apart, such as the tool box cover, the seat belt caps, and recently the handle to pull down the trunk lid.
My tailgate and tailgate window are filthy most of the time, just like a city bus. I purchased a spoiler but changed my mind about installing it, because I like the way my SR5 looks without the spoiler attached.
Toyota has called several times saying that their records show I have maintained my vehicle (I do the regularly maintenance at Toyota) and they would like to buy it back. Several months have past and how I get a letter saying they have a special market pricing and financing event and would like to offer me a deal. Is this common practice? Should I see what they have to say? My vehicle is in very good condition (no dents, clean interior). I just don't think I will get any benefit trading in mine for another one.
DO NOT FALL FOR ANY OF THAT!! That is such a common practice, dealers paying to have these "letters" written up and sent out to people who have done business with them in the past or calling them, with an invitation to this "special market event". It's all just a game and taking your vehicle there during one of those times (not that they always really exist, either..) is not going to get you anymore for it or any kind of better deal on a new car.
They just want you to fall for it and come do business again. It's crap--stay away!!
I'm ordering a 2005 Sequoia Limited. I'm looking for more information on the rear height control air suspension option. I don't tow much, but expect to occasionaly. What are the pros/cons of having that suspension? Will I notice a difference in everyday driving?
Just bought a new Silver 2004 SR5 4x4 w/sunroof and basic extras for $33,999. Good bargin I think. It's interesting how dealerships vary, one had same Sequoia in black with 500 miles and a burned out headlight. They didn't want to haggle in the $33-34k range for their errand runner. Needless to say I'm thrilled with this vehicle/decision. A no brainer! Did anyone pay Toyota to have the DVD System installed? Is it a seemless integration?
Could I get some towing experiences from Sequoia owners who have been towing trailers close to the max. tow limit? I'm looking at lighweight trailers in the 5-6,000 GVWR range which would max out the Sequoia. I'd like to know if you are using a weight distributing hitch and, if possible, if you can compare towing with the Sequoia to other vehicles.
I've towed a 4,500 pound car on a 2,000 pound trailer, the Sequoia did excellent. Just be careful at night, without a way to level the suspension it'll throw your headlights up in the air.
I routinely tow a 6,000lb. travel trailer with my '01 2wd seq. Took it to Yellowstone from Sacramento, and up to Oregon coast many times, over the I5 summit. Handles great. On the steepest grades I am in the slow lane in second gear going 40-45 mph, could go faster if I wanted to wind it up but I am satisfied. Once you put the weight distribution bars on you should have no problems. I do not use overdrive when towing as it continually kicks in and out.
I don't have mirror extensions I just use fish eye mirrors, and visibility is only OK.
Sure, I pull a travel trailer with my 2002 Seq. SR5 2WD in the same weight class as your looking. The Sequoia does great using an Equal-i-zer hitch http://www.equalizerhitch.com purchased here http://www.rvwholesalers.com and using a Prodigy brake controller. This is a great setup and running with OD "off", the Sequoia will do just fine! You can see the Equalizer setup on my Sequoia here: http://www.kevinhawk.com/camping/eq4.jpg
Thank you both for your responses. That makes me feel pretty confident that I'm going to be fine.
Raddboy41, thanks for the recommendations on the equalizer hitch and break controller. I'll definitely look at those. Did you get the middle sized equalizer hitch (1000/10000) as opposed to the small one which was 600/6000? Seems the small one would do since the tongue weight on the Sequoia is limited to 500 lbs and I definitely won't be towing more than 6000 lbs, but I guess more is better right?
Your welcome. Definitely go for the 1000/10000 bars as I believe the tongue weight limitation is WITHOUT weight distribution hitch. With the Equalizer hitch and heavier bars, you'll be just fine at 600-650lbs of tongue weight. Even if the trailer is only 5000 lbs, you can realistically expect the tongue weight to be 12%-15% and that's exactly where it should be!
Can anyone tell me where the Glass Break sensor is located on the 05 SRg Sequoia?
My manual shows it should be located in the lower console area in one of the available slots directly below the dash. The book shows it has a label on it of "Toyota Security" and "MIC". Is this a misprint, or did I not get my GBS? Thanks for any help! zlaneb
It is probably not that difficult for a dealer to install. One piece goes in the location I told you,and the other part goes either under or behind the dash. All of the wiring is in place though.
I have found a local car dealer advertising a 2004 SR5 for around 28000 dollars with 22000 miles on it. It looks good from outside in pictures and retail price of a similar car from kbb.com is 24 to 26K. 1) What would be an ideal price for this SUV?
Also I found 5 entries in the CARFAX request (free version), but couldn't believe a new SUV can have 5 entries in it in the firs years itself. have to buy the report and verify it. 2) But does this many number of entries mean an accident or so? How do I verify it?
3) Since it is still under warranty, should I get it inspected by another dealer before I buy it?
This is the first time I am buying an expensive SUV from the secondary market and look forward to your advice.
One thing that might help, find out if it's certified or not. If it is look at what it takes to become certified so you know what hasn't happened. If it isn't, find out why.
Thanks for your reply. This SR5 is sold by another German luxury car dealer (not toyota or acura). So Can non-Toyota dealers certify the Toyota vehicles?
If I enquire at DMV office, will they tell me more details on title history? I can also try taking it to a Toyota dealer, but I am not sure if I will get the complete pictue from them on vehicle condition..
Please share your experiences and help me as I am planning to get the nest one in a week.
Thanks for the information. I called the Dealer today and was told that the manual, you, and I where all wrong about the location of the GBS. The Dealer service manager was insistant that the GBS is like the 04- located under the driver steerinng column. I assure him there was nothing like a mic or a 'black box' that i could use to adjust the sensitivity.
I believe this is one where he is wrong. Thanks for your input 2toy.
I have an 05 Sequoia and the sensor is in the center. The RSCA OFF switch Roll Sensing curtain airbags is where the Glass sensor used to be. I am 100% sure the dealer is wrong. Good Luck!!
There is a black box under the steering column that you could adjust the sensitivity, but it is hidden with the wiring. The mic says VIP and is in the center console on the right. If you don't see that, I doubt you have the sensitivity box behind the dash. They are sold together as a two piece unit. I is either a dealer installed,or a port installed option.
Wow, 714cut, petro33 and tooheeldrive. Where's oac3?
Hi Paul:
I am here reporting for duty, sir !
Been gone from this forum for quite a while. Nice to see some of the "old-faithfuls" still around. 2heeldrive is one heck of a poster. Glad to see he is still around. Ditto 714cut, raddboy, etc...
Heatwave's demise ?? Pray, pls say it ain't so !!! I hope that Pete is fine and well wherever he is today. But, he is one heck of a poster as well, if for nothing, but to raise up the blood pressure of Seq owners.... So much fun, the good ol' days !!
Oh, my '01 Seq has needed one major trip to the dealer - replacing the brakes. Oil changes (every 5K miles), new tires (Michelin LTX), and plenty of love has kept it going for 55K miles. And still going strong....
BUT, my wife is turning 40 in October 2005 and has put me on notice what she wants for her big 4-0. A Lexus LX470. That would mean our dear old reliable Sequoia will be meeting with the dealer for a good exchange by next summer. Until then, we'll continue to enjoy it.
I bought a 2004 SR5 about 3 weeks ago. You are leaving several things out of your description to be able to tell if its a good deal. 1) 4X4 or 4X2 2) Cloth or leather 3) Sunroof
I was getting quotes on a brand new SR5 4X4 cloth, sunroof, at around $34K including freight. So a car with 2 years worth of mileage wouldn't have interested me unless it was substantially cheaper.
I am new to this forum. Last week I purchased a '05 Limited 2WD with DVD entertainment, navigation, and Luxury packages. The owner's manual mentions the rear (2nd role) console has a cassette/DVD tray underneath the console cover. However, mine is empty, no tray. The car sales who sold me the car told me that he had checked all new Sequoias which equiped with the luxury package but all of them have an empty console without a tray just like mine. He confirmed that the owner's manual has a picture showing the tray in the rear console which is a mystery to him.
Does anyone knows whether the rear console should come with a DVD/cassette or not?
Thanks for the replies about the GBS. I am heading over to the dealer this weekend to have them 'show me where it is located'.
They are not being unreasonable, they just believe it is there.
One other questions for owners. How to I validate that I truely received the 150 AMP alternator? I opened the hood and actually could'nt even find the alternato. The reason I ask this question is if they didn't do the GBS as part of that package, I suspect the Alternator was not provided either. Any suggestions? Zlaneb
I would have chosen the Cross Terrains, but when I needed a tire change, I had to go with what was in stock at the tire shop I had the truck towed to (due to a blown front passenger side tire). Hence the LTX. But from what I have read and heard, both the XT and LTX are pretty good tires. Both are quiet, handle very well on wet and dry pavements, and have long thread lives. I am sure you won't go wrong with the XT.
How much did you pay? I bought mine with navigation, DVD, luxury package, sidecurtain airbag, rear spoiler, moon roof, floor mats, daytime running light for about $41,900 + tax and fee. I thought it is an excellent deal. The only disappointment is it lacks of rearview camera. I am considering to add one myself.
Was at the dealership this past weekend and found some time to check out the 2005 Sequoia. After giving it a good look over, I must say I was NOT impressed with the so-called subtle changes to the front grill and the rear. Geez !!! The car has lost some of its muscle in this new look. What's that grill supposed to be for ? And that bulbous rear taillights ??? Ugly. I do prefer my 2001 look much much better. The new 282HP with VVT-i motor is a welcome upgrade to the previous 240hp, but I found it quite noisy. Far noisier than my 6-yr old '99 LS with the 290hp motor. Maybe not quite apples-to-apples, but why won't Toyota sound-proof the engine bay for the tester I had which rang up at $44K (loaded 2WD LTD). And what's with the "Sport Package" ?? Adding "sport" to a supposed "Sport Utility Vehicle" ??? More of a gimmick, imo. I am concerned about the design direction that Toyota (and even Honda) is taking these days. Just too many ugly ducklings being churned out.... With the billions of dollars in profits they make every quarter, can't they find a good Italian car designer to spruce up these morbid designs they are turning out ??? Look at the Echo, the Camry, the xA, xB, Solara, Avalon, and now the Sequoia. I am disappointed big time. Even the new Tacoma is bordersome ugly, while the 4Runner is just barely tolerable.... Ditto the RAV4 and Highlander.... Contrast this with the cutesy MR2 which Toyota is killing in 2005. Sad..... Someone at TMC needs a wake-up call and SOON too.
I agree with you OAC on the SQ changes and other current TMC vehicles - just don't like the direction Toyoata is taking. The only decent looking vehicle left is the Land Cruiser, which is in year 8 of its design. I am holding on to my 2001 SQ until I see the new LC design, but you can probably go ahead and book it, TMC will likely ruin it, too.
Your statement, "I bought mine with navigation, DVD, luxury package, sidecurtain airbag, rear spoiler, moon roof, floor mats, daytime running light for about $41,900 + tax and fee. I thought it is an excellent deal." is indeed an excellent deal.

The tester I had this past weekend had a sticker (MSRP) of $44K. It was a 2WD Limited, with everything except Nav. The invoice on that puppy is a tad over $39K. Seeing as there was little traffic at the dealership, a $1000 over invoice is a do-able deal. Add in a portable GPS unit for $500, and you have a great deal at $40.5K or thereabouts. Of course, if this is a 4WD, add extra $1500 or so. Look around, send out emails to dealership within a 100 mile radius. Get quotes from fleet managers of several dealerships. You'll get a great deal. Remember, this is not the hottest time of the year to buy a car. And with the economy, elections, high gas prices.... you should be able to get a great deal just by asking.

I'm considering a GX470 for which the 2005 won't be out until December and trying to decide if it's worth the wait vs. a good deal on a 2004.
Thanks in advance.

Looks like i am heading back to Dealer to have it installed. DARN IT!!!
Can anyone tell me if the Glass Break sensor is prewired, or if they are going to have to do some fancy wiring to get it in now?

My '05 is outfitted almost exactly like your's except that it's a 4WD. The second row bin is EMPTY (darn it) on mine too.
